It might be related to or even be "doll syndrome", but even if it is that phenomenon has been given another name: "outdoor withdrawl" (autodoa hikikomori). They mention it in the news part of the new trailer and in first login. Basically, thanks to wifi and a new compact controller, people can play anywhere, so parks, etc., are filled with people completely withdrawn from society, something that couldn't happen before. They're surrounded by people, yet alone. I'm pretty sure it's different because it's been given a different term, but "doll syndrome" might just be a fancy name for it.
Still, isn't "doll syndrome" really only affecting young children? Makes it sound like something completely separate from what we know about... I'm sure elementary students play The World, but a seemingly proportionate amount of adults do too.

I too think doll syndrome is an AIDA related syndrome where a player has his/her body controlled by the AIDA and the AIDA uses the players body to hijack his character...Tri Edge anyone?

In the new review from IGN it states that they have developed technology to the point that they now have VR headphones with portable controllers which means you can log in to The World from anyplace as long as you have those.

I've got one.

How about, the player becomes so addicted to the game that he spends all of his free time playing it. Outside the game he acts normal, but while inside the game he is being controlled by the system.

Pretty sure they don't act normal on outside the game, or else no one would know about it and it wouldn't be being researched...

hikikomori :P that is a big problem in japan but not outdoor of course. Well I think Doll Syndrome could be over-exposure to the world. Since "The World" is filled with tons of PK's I don't think it's good for a child's psyche to see death over and over. It could traumatize them and cause them to pull themselves from society. Or it could drastically alter their personality. In Japan many people have a pachinko addiction, and that sounds like a gambling problem but in a study it showed the lights etc. Shut down parts of a persons brain much like a drug. The World may have this effect.

That theory is pretty close to the one I posted before in this thread. It is still a possibility that theory is the one responsible for the doll syndrome.

My guess:

Doll syndrome could be compared to, say, what gamers have.
Whenever addicted gamers (or normal gamers for that matter) are playing on their PC or console, they're body becomes like a statue and all they can concentrate at is the game.
They don't see anything else but the game, they don't hear anything else but the game.

I, myself have experienced such thing. It wasn't really good at all

I suupose you could compare the doll syndrome to that.. at least, that's my wide shot in the open. feel free to forget or comment :P

Might have something to do with the "net-related violence" too...

Ok, I just watched the Online Jack episode and it explains a little bit about what the Doll Syndrome is. From what I got from it, this is a quote from the fansub.

"[Doll Syndrome is] an illness where a child becomes unrepsonsive or loses vitality and blood. In other words, the children become like dolls."

In the episodes, it explains a belief of how this syndrome is causes. It is believed to be gained through net games like The World.

Loses vitality and blood...in what way if I may ask? (if you happen to know...) Do thoose just disappear? I can understand vitality but blood...that sounds like The World would be trying to gather itself vitality...and blood (sounds so weird).
This sounds really scary actually.

Okay, I'm watching Online Jack right now..lemme see what I can find out...
I'll quote it :P

"Doll Syndrome is a mysterious illness that has been secretly spreading to mainly elementary students. It's an ilness where, a child becomes unresponsive or loses vitality and blood. In other words, the children become like dolls!"

Which means it's probably got something to do with 'The World'. How it happens is yet to be told.

Loss of blood, I have no idea. I simply quoted the fan sub. As for vitality, they probably mean strength or stamina. Like, after they play an online game for a while, they probably lose a lot of strength and become tired and motionless. Like when people wake up early in the morning. They don't want to get out of bed so they just lay there for a while.

If this is the first Online Jack episode you're referring to, the bit about "blood" is a mistranslation.

I thought that it might be a mistranslation. Since I could not find a rational way to explain kids losing blood by playing the game. Thank you again for clearing that up Shinsou Wotan.

lol I thought they just somehow accidentally wounded themselves, but later on the mistranslation thing occurred to me as well.
