
According to Wikipedia: 5th largest earthquake ever recorded in the world since 1900. The earthquake was northeast of Honshu. This was the worst recorded earthquake in Japans history.

Our Richter scale list the earthquake as 8.9 while JMA list it as 7.9 or 8.4? Alright Google confirms it's 8.9.

There also has been a Tsuami Warning issued for Japan, Hawaii, Philippines, Indonesia, Papua, New Guinea and the entire west coast of the US. There are evacuations issued for the coast of Hawaii. The Tsunami waves are expected to hit Hawaii. 11,000 people are also being evacuated from the Russia coastland. It'll reach the US west coast around 7-8 am pst.
Telephones, power lines are down in Japan and supplies are being bought out in the convenience stores.
There were several aftershocks after the earthquake. Literally so much information is pouring out right now. They say its the largest Earthquake JMA has recorded. 20+ aftershocks after the initial earthquake with a 5.0 or greater.
The tip of Tokyo Tower has been bent from the severity of the Earthquakes.

All flights at Tokyo Narita airport (arrivals, departures) set from canceled/delayed to "indefinite".
People are stranded since the trains are down.
