Final Fantasy 7 Vs .Hack

I said I played a little of FF8. And I only played it because of Kingdom Hearts, NOT the other way around. I'll admit, I had some fun (Leon's special attack was pretty cool, can't remember the name). But, it got boring and confusing. I quit after I got lost, trying to assassinate someone or something rather.Passé wrote:Then how can you judge it fairly?Red Frost wrote:I've never played a FF game.
I was a little sick of hearing about how great FF was, and I kinda hated it without trying. I know that's petty, but I did try it. I was having some fun, but I had no idea what I was doing.
Dot Hack just has a great story, and it really makes you think (Like Annwyn said). The characters are awesome, and the fighting is in real time (not a big fan of turn based). And the story is very emotional.
I don't know, I think this is a stupid comparison. FFVII is over ten years old, this year. .hack is only half of FFVII's age. If we were comparing whether one would rather play FFXII over .hack, I think that'd be a bit more appropriate.
Also, I disagree, Annwyn, that "...there's no way FFVII could beat .hack['s story]." FFVII's story stays with me to this day, and it's actually just as appropriate to real world situations as .hack is -- both share elements of cyberpunk, and FFVII has quite a bit of political and social commentary.
What I disagree about more, though, is that you claim FFVII's cast is two-dimensional. Sure, I agree, to a point (Vincent, Yuffie, Cait Sith), but if you're saying characters in IMOQ are three-dimensional, I think you're dreaming. There are a slew of characters throughout the four games, and you really only get to know a few of them in depth. There are so many forgettable characters just thrown into the mix that could be taken out with no effect whatsoever on the plot (I'm looking at you, Rachel, Natsume, Moonstone, Nuke Usagimaru, Marlo, Terajima Ryoko, etc.). //G.U.'s characters, while much more focused and well-done, still follow an archetype prominent throughout the entire Japanese RPG market.
Keep in mind, also, that while people here rag on the FF community, there's just as many "questionable" .hack fanboys that drive me up a freaking pole. Even though I sing .hack's praises, I don't think it's so godlike as some make it out to be. I'm actually kind of sick of the media-whoring philosophy behind it all. The same goes with Final Fantasy, more recently. However, I don't think any of them are greatly over-rated. Each one is a wonderful experience in its own merit, and I like different things about each game.
Either way, I still prefer FF over most Japanese RPG series (barring maybe SMT or Shadow Hearts games), so that's just my dissent. I don't "worship" FFVII, but I think it truly is a groundbreaking game, and it set quite a bit of standards in the JRPG market. Sure, it's not perfect, by any means, but at the time, it was just an amazing experience.

I'm glad this is getting so many different opinions... I was thinking of going to an FF board somewhere and posting this, but .hack is much less known.
Also, to all the people quoting age, I agree and it can't be helped... but I did ask for you to vote putting graphics aside.. (FF1-10.2 were all the same battle system with the exception of some classes or summoms) I actually really enjoyed all of the Final Fantasies I have plaid, and still play them today. I was getting tired of the turn based element, ready to resign from square, than BAM!! *live battle system!*
But IMHO, .hack just got it right.. The story unfolds mysteriously as you progress; every question that's answered leads to a new, deeper, question. The battle system in GU is awesome. You can actually dodge attacks while fighting, you can have your team bombard him in the front while you go for critical hits in the back...
Thanks for all your votes, and keep it up GUys and GUrls.

If that's what he's saying, then no, I never said that. I think it's tough to say I like a ten-year-old game more or less than such a new series. It's also tough for me, because I've been following Final Fantasy as long as I've been following video games.Astra wrote:i think he means, "can he summarize it", and he says "you like .hack better"
Atleast I didn't try Mario VS Master Chief. MARIO FTWMaromi wrote: If that's what he's saying, then no, I never said that. Oh, wait. I do have to say one thing.
As much as I prefer .hack to FFVII, no character in ANY form of media will ever come to the same level of ownage as Red XIII.
That is all.

EDIT: Oh yeah! I only meant to say I enjoyed the IMOQ characters so much because it actually felt like there could be real players behind them--not to say they're 3D in comparison with FFVII characters. Now, Terajima Ryoko, I could do without... Ten times over.

That is a really good point... There was FF7 PS1, than Advent children (movie) than Dirge of cerberus (ps2 as vincent), followed by another FF7 movie and a few more video games...marthwmaster wrote:I'm just a little creeped out that you're not including the entirety of the .hack franchise in this poll, considering that FF7 is beginning to develop its own industry's worth of sidestories.
I have seen a topic asking people how much they have spent on the .hack series, I will make one asking how much you have spent on the FF series in it's entirety.
I will make it in off topic section.

yeah, its kinda hard to say which one is my fav of the two. I can remember both my experiences with FF7 and definitely w/ .hack. I have to say that through it all, I've enjoyed both pretty greatly in their own times (my little bro has Dirge so when i go home I can finally try it out), both were an awesome gaming experience. When there was nothing but turnbased rpgs, FF7 pwn'd (tho I never beat it...sigh). I was always so wrapped up in the story. It was so interesting to me the places theywent and the events they took part in. The battles for back then were pretty hot too.
When I took the plung into The World for the first time, I was older of course and my taste for games and such were more defined. Playing .hack was such a fun experience, though the games were (and still are) kinda short. Loved the story and the gameplay was very much freeroaming compared to turnbased games. .hack and KH are what made me turn from turnbased games and seek realtime battle splender, because of the freedom of battle(though the system was limited in some respects) and everything. The characters (kinda iffy on kite) were pretty interesting, moreso blackrose than kite, but their team helped to balance out Kite's boring goody good act, so I liked him in his heroics. The whole makeup for the .hack formula was as intriguing to me was FF7 was, if not more so. Fighting invincible monsters, people falling to comas from a game. Hackin stuff. What's not to love about it? Anyways in regards to both franchises, I like .hack bettercuz....I just like .hack better. jk. Its moreso b/c of my taste changing in games, even just alittle bit. Plus there was so much media to go along with IMOQ that there was a continual story, backwards and forwards that I could follow (story is what I'm most drawn to...and cool graphics.)
So i'd say .hack for me, but I wouldnt say FF7 got PWN'd by it. Both were very memorable experiences that will live on in me forever...or at least until I forget. lol! like that'll ever happen.
