Origin of Monsier and Grandpa

Post by Mecha-man »

Are Grandpa and Monsier related to some myth or something? They seem to pop up in other games as well, where they upgrade your items as well (as fairy's in the Legend of Zelda for example), so it led me to think they might have an origin in a myth or maybe a fairy tail. I also would like to know if there are any other games with this upgrade system, as to understand the subject better.

There was a myth where a man lost his axe in a river, and Hermes, mischeif and messenger God, came down to help him. He asked him if he dropped a Silver Axe or a Gold Axe, and when the man answered honestly, he received both plus his original axe. The man's brother saw this, and dropped an axe in the river. Hermes came and asked which he dropped, and when he asked for the Golden Axe, Hermes caught him on his lie and he was left with nothing.
