You should try re-reading the whole Vol 1 to 3 again. I wondered too, but if you notice, they only see the name "BALMUNG". Not the player. The "Swordsman" Rena was fantacising about, she don't know its Balmung, neither do Milleyu(SP? >_>). They probably never see Balmung, and even though Balmung made an appearence, he never said he is balmung in front of them, until the end. It was pretty hilarious when I re-read the whole thing XD.

PS: Pardon my character spellings... I read the chinese translation, not the english. English Translation of a manga is the equivalent to a dub of an anime. Chinese Translation For the win! =)
