So what games have you all played that felt similar to The World and .hack?
For myself Ragnarok online and Asheron's Call 2 (RIP, goddess I miss that game) have been the only games to really come close to capturing that feeling for myself. I've played Ragnarok Online since it was in late alpha early beta, back in 1999-2000.
Asheron's call 2 was very much like .hack and The World in game play, level design and feel. Sadly it was put down by Turbine long ago and exist only as a memory. Did play Everquest for a bit after watching .hack long ago, and spent most of my time listening to music from .hack and Serial experiments lain while playing it. But lost interest in it very quick.
What games do you play that give a "the World",.hack Feel

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn does give me abit of that feel, the aetherytes do look/seem abit like the Chaos Gates :3

Asheron's Call 2 came back to life at the end of last year. Turbine put up a new server of the game, though it is available only to those still having a subscription to Asheron's Call (the first one). Don't know if it's still up currently, though.
On the topic : I never played any MMO which gave me a .hack feel. That said, as a former FFXIV beta tester, I must agree with FZFalzar about the aetherytes.
The closest MMO to .hack (GU games) that I played, gameplay-wise, is Phantasy Star Online 2. Same mechanics of "root area" and field system. The action battle system feels a lot like it too. However the background is far, far, far away of it... Require to be able to read a bit of japanese.

Yeah found out a few days ago about AC2 and been playing it. It was nice to get back into it, special since it had many element to it that no other game has copied. Such no real classes, just three skill tree for each race that you can pick and chose from to some degree. SO you can be a ranger spec with magic skills as well, or melee class with ranges and magic skills etc. The Vault are basically dungeons that are cut off from the rest of the world, much like The Worlds areas. And no Elf and Orcs for once, just lots of never seen before races.
Sadly I doubt any game will every truly capture the feel of the whole The World/,hack unless they actual make a .hack MMO. Sadly I doubt they ever will, they seem to have no interesting in coding a game that is a emulation of "The World". Which is to bad, I think all the idea behind it would make for a fun and interesting game that would be complete different then all other games. The whole point of "The World" is it is a game, that doesn't try to hide that behind Role-playing itself some as some distant fantasy world. Other games seem so intent on try to make you believe it's a alternative world, and not enough on just being a fun game to log into and play.
Sadly most games anymore bore me to death simple tehy so heavy handed with the "this is a fantaasy world", instead of trying to be a fun Game, and end up basically being copies of other games that came before them with different art and lore. Nothing true different or new. They just update the graphics, change the lore but have the same type of mechanics under the hood. Just give me a game that fun to play with new mechanics, and doesn't try to hide the fact it is a game.

Re: What games do you play that give a "the World",.hack Fee
I'm quite sure that even if CC2 or any other studio tried to create an MMO based on The World, it wouldn't work that well outside of the .hack fanbase. If made as depicted in .hack games, I'm hardly able to find what could appeal the average MMO player. The battle system would probably be its strongest point. Then the universe itself, since it's not close to any other MMO. Probably the guild housing system, too. The story with Aura/Tri-Edge could be used for the main quests. After that ? Can't really tell. The World has many standard systems (pvp, items, classes, arenas...). It would be a well-rounded game, but without a strong selling point. It's not enough for a commercial success, investors wouldn't go for it. Something like an epic Kickstarter campaign could work, but I don't know if the crowd funding is having the same success in Japan as the one we know in occident.
The right thing to do, in my opinion, would be to try to reproduce what a player in The World, as seen in anime/games, feel. But such a game shouldn't be The World, because the game itself isn't supposed to host Aura/Morgana. Basically, it should be a game with an advanced IA which can go beyond the expectation of its developers. What is hard to do, but doable.

Haven't actually found one, but then again .hack was my first RPG and that's a nostalogic feeling that is hard to replicate other than replaying. Not even the second set of games felt the same as IMOQ to me.
