What the heck Sony? No backwards capabilities and games locked to one single PSN account just doesn't make any sense. They are going to lose a lot of money with this piece of crap. To tell you the truth I've been hating a lot of gaming in this era lately. It is because gaming companies are being greedy with not putting full game on disk but still release dlc, and what some popular games become. I rather stick to PS1/2 and PSP than getting the new Sony console.

If a person buys a crappy game, or they simple just don't want it anymore they won't be able to sell it. Not being able to play older games sucks as well. Sony and one else who thinks of ideas like this needs the double facepalm.

There are to many problems to count with this retarded concept. If I buy a game I want to be able to play it where ever im stationed, with this system you would litterally have to cart your console around with you even if your friend has the same console. and what if you dont have internet how will you connect to psn to boot the game in the first place. This is such bad marketing its not even funny. Its gonna be a bust if they go with this and I for one will surely not support such ignorance.

I get that sales have been weak, but honestly if they would stop depending on these stupid Motion sensors and other gimicks sales would be just fine.
A game that has touch screen capabilities or motion sensor capabilities but crappy game play and a weak story is still just a crappy game and no amount of gimicks can fix that......so instead of adding random potentially awesome features how about making games that are actually fun and have content.
Hardcore gamers is where your real money comes from so they should never be second to casual or family based gamers

Wow, I'm guessing they don't even want to produce discs anymore. Seriously, I'm starting to wonder what gaming companies think we are.

This doesn't bold well for Sony. The three benefits of online disc are no replacements, wider memory space and a lower game cost. But that is literally it andthe corporation has even manage to negate two them. What else could Sony gain from the Orbis? The cost of an online won't lower, wider space does exist but with a console that requires the user to be online to play the game in the first place who cares because 2/5 will have a poor connection and 1/5 servers will be full. No backwards compatibility saves the system money and even allows developers redistribute their content but it outright kills interest for the fans. Plus it encourages remakes which practically dominate the movie business. After that limiting a second user who purchases a game from another user to nothing but a trial and then adding yet another content fee for the game itself is an insult and that is not mentioning DLC as it is now. Heck can I still let my friend well borrow a game, well, apparently not? This article must be false or there some amazing idea for sony and the users that I must have overlooked.

I honestly don't think it'll matter going into the future. Steam for example caters to a downloadable game service to retain your games for you, cheaper cost of production and distribution. Other companies are starting to catch on to this novelty such as EA's ORIGIN. Pretty soon the need to "resale" games will become unheard of.

I believe that is a good examination. But what occurs after the problems add PlayStation Network fees, an unseen economic cost such as the price of an internet connection itself, downloadable content for shorter games and if the market so allows it an increase in the business price for the game itself. This also creates heavy data mining which tracks the content for each user and then advertises those results back onto the community based on their preferences. It is not negative for the economy but ethically its a privacy abomination. Then to add icing to the cake it almost eliminates used game stores & online auctioning. Furthermore if the server crashes then we will have a repeat of .hack and an idea somewhat similar to a network crises. Yes the statement is a bit dramatized but it is very realistic based on how integrated humans continue to meld with technology and databases. Much less credit theft. However on a brighter side all I have said is just pessimistic nonsense and in truth it will be alright as people work out kinks for the future.

There are two reasons companies want to lock out used sales:
1) They are greedy (and we don't care about this reason)
2) Video games are "communal art." They require a lot of money to create, and none of this money is recouped when you buy a used game (* except for the premium in cost of the physical copy over the digital copy--that price difference can be thought of as a "secondhand sale" surcharge, but it's still easy to see they're not making as much from the sale as they could selling two digital copies)

So if you buy a used copy of some obscure indie title, you shouldn't be too surprised if there's no sequel. Buying a used game saves us money, but hurts our ability to fund the games we love.

The problem is reason 1. How can we distinguish between reason 1 and reason 2? Sometimes they're being greedy, sometimes they need the money. Getting ripped off half the time just so Godhand 2 comes out bothers me.

The other problem is this: Steam might not be around in 20 years, a disc will. Neither Steam, nor PSN, nor Xbox Live have any obligation to authenticate your games for you forever. I still play games I bought in the 90s. The idea that an entire generation of games can be "turned off" and you would have to repurchase what's available from new licensees and forget about the ones that aren't is incredibly disturbing to me.

So, my own personal opinion has these several discordant tracts of reasoning. But luckily, it looks like emerging ideas might put all these worries behind us. Ideas like Kickstarter let you fund games directly, rather than post-facto via some giant publishing conglomerate. By the time it's done it's already been paid for. Reason 2 for wanting your money disappears, it's all reason 1. If they have another great idea for a game, they should put that on Kickstarter too and see how that goes, you no longer need to worry about them. Go ahead, decrypt/copy the game. Pay what you want. That's my reasoning, in any case, and I hope it catches on. If people demand it, it pretty much has to. If I launched a Kickstarter project that would be my philosophy--minus some awesome bonus content for the people who actually paid.

So in my opinion the Orbis and Xbox 720 are moving boldly into the past, and by the end of their lifecycles gaming will be dominated by $99-on-Amazon eleventeen core mobile devices playing games you chose to have created. I know there are a lot of bad things to say about Kickstarter but now that the idea is out there and has already worked some miracles it can only be refined. Who knows what other unforeseen ways the game (heh) will change in the next 10 years?

I think this is considered Illegal because they're charging people twice for 1 product and requiring an internet connection to even use the product, which not everyone has.

Either way, I've nearly stopped playing video games all together now because there's hardly anything worth playing coming out now, and the smart producers aren't making them exclusive titles anymore.

Lets face it, Sony's gaming section is dead. They don't even have Monster Hunter anymore because Nintendo's getting MH games. If they wanna salvage SCE they should seriously consider dominating and innovating the Handheld market where Microsoft hasn't seriously ventured yet.

Dominating that Handheld market is simply a matter of using the right games from the right genres.
Sidescrollers like Megaman and Megaman X should've had a lot more games on the PSP with its Widescreen design.
2D Fighters (With 3d Models) would also be a good idea to have more of.
Racing games are popular with nearly everyone, and you could use Ad-Hoc with it quite well.
Online RPGs would do really well too, especially since the Vita has 3G or Wi-Fi.

With handhelds its all about convenience. The gameplay either has to be quick with no real penalty for suddenly putting it down, or you should be able to stop and save at almost any time and put it down to give someone your attention.

Though I'm with you here, I wouldn't say they're completely dead...though they aren't really thriving either...

LOL AHAHAHAHA

OH! Don't get me started with Microsoft and handheld gaming! They've been vehemently stating that they're making a handheld console for OVER 6 YEARS!!

http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/19639/Mic ... -Handheld/
http://editorials.teamxbox.com/xbox/166 ... plored/p1/

http://www.google.com/cse?cx=0132690183 ... gsc.page=1

And still nothing~

But what you say about SCE trying to jump on the handheld competition. That's what the "claim" they're trying to do with the PS Vita...hard to say if its really that appealing though. I'd rather buy a 3DS(which I'm seriously considering)
Vita has 3G or Wi-Fi.
It has either one, you gotta pay for either of them. I believe the 3G one is more expensive though.

Yeah, I know that about the Vita, which was kinda stupid in all honestly. 3G isn't all that good and isn't everywhere.

As far as the 3DS... With the fact that they proved its 3D mode causes serious eye strain, and said the console should only be used for 30 minutes at a time with the 3D turned off before they even released the product... I'm sorry, but that was just poor planning. But Nintendo does seem to have the Handheld marked right now. They have more games that people are interested in on it.

Nintendo has Handhelds.
Microsoft has Consoles and PCs.
Sony has Hardware and Quality (audio and visual).

The biggest issue though is that the PS3 STILL isn't affordable yet for us people on a budget and they're already planning to make yet another super expensive advancement of technology? Didn't they learn last time when they were taking huge losses because the Blu-Ray was so expensive they weren't making a profit on a single system?

It's not illegal because they're charging you for the abstract concept of being allowed to use a game in a limited fashion, not an actual game. And even if the contract for that didn't hold up in court, they got their own law passed, the DMCA, that says even if you own the game (if they somehow lost the case I just described--which they haven't or Steam might be over) you still aren't allowed to decrypt it and do what you want with it. It's just useless bytes, legally. Our property laws were conceived by old men wearing wigs and blouses 235 years ago, they don't apply to modern technology very well.

Microsoft's already a move ahead of Nintendo with handhelds. It seems stupid right now, and all those "Apple killed Nintendo" articles that keep popping up are totally moronic, but they're based on something Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said and there's a reason he said what he did. Angry Birds isn't the future of gaming. But in 5 years, for less than a 360 was at launch you'll be able to get a mobile device that you can plug into your TV and play Skyrim on with a bluetooth controller. You'll also be able to play it pretty much anywhere, add people locally to your game. The "App" paradigm reinfranchises all of the people who get confused by PC installation screens. Maybe consoles will still be around then. But 10, 20 years? Their only hope is that they can make it simpler to play games on a console than a phone, like they did with PC, but all the extra features make the phone a lot cooler, plus it doesn't get much simpler than an iPhone.

Now Windows Phone is doing horribly, but so did the Xbox at first. But Microsoft knew gaming was going to get bigger, threw money into it, and now the Xbox is winning. I think this is going to be along the same lines. Google, which has patented seeing the future, is already there and didn't even really try to be.

The Vita is basically a fancyass phone that can't call anyone. Sony's going for that "simpler" approach. They also have a Playstation phone branding.

Sony's been outselling the Xbox consistently lately, in spite of the remaining price difference, mainly due to games. I really wouldn't count anyone "out"...

I can understand not playing games that much lately. The only game series I'm looking even a little forward to is the new Bioshock.

Windows Phone. They're the only gaming company with their own phone OS and and app store that multiple vendors are building phones for. That's like half the point of Windows 8, too. Windows Phone 7 already supports Xbox Live and has games with achievements and multiplayer. Sure, the games suck, but they're the only thing that millions of phone owners with WP7 phones can play. And sure, right now it's just "millions", but there are going to be a lot more cellphones to sell in the near future. And the games will probably start getting better as the hardware does, which it is doing at a rapid pace.

I should have said "two moves ahead" of Nintendo, since Sony's one move ahead. Sony built their own mobile device and a sub-class of devices running the Android OS. Microsoft went further and built their own OS.

Nintendo's been doing great up till now, but it doesn't translate very well now that phones can do great-looking touchscreen games too. That's why Iwata's upset.

This is, of course, why The World has been depicted as running on mobile devices for 4 out of 5 versions (2 of them before smartphones were even invented, although Altimit Mine and P-Com are pretty close predictions). Developers see this coming. CC2 had the insight to explore what "outdoor recluses" would be like and all the potential controversy long before the first Angry Birds player drove into a truck.

Can you blame him? The fact that mobile phone gaming has gotten this big has pissed me off personally. Call me old-fashioned but I don't care how advanced we get iwth gaming tech, I'd still prefer playing games with a controller in both hands, and game media in the form of a disc/cartridge and downloads only for MMOs, etc. (But that's probably not why Iwata's annoyed and I can't find the article)

The World R:2, The World R:X and The World Force:Era are the only 3 I can think of that can run on mobile, what's the fourth one?
