This RP takes place outside of the normal .hack continuity. All major events that take place within the games has not happened within the universe of this RP (mainly because I don't know the entire story yet
Background Story
The Word, created by CC Corp, has become the most popular MMO in the world, with over 20 million subscribers. In addition, CC Corp's Altimit Operating System has also become very popular, competing with Windows for the most widely used around the world. Much of this success has been contributed to the corporation's so-called Super Boy, Gary Pluto, the 17-year-old genius son of the corporation's head, Hank Pluto, who has worked on and even solely created many of CC Corp's newest technological advancements. The most popular of these products is called the Virtual Box. The Virtual Box is a large box that, when players enter it and allow it to connect to their brainwaves, can simulate the actual senses one would experience if he or she physically existed inside The World.
Such a device hasn't gone without its controversy though. Not long after the device's release many people began using it rather extensively, spending more time within the game world than in their real life. There have been cases where people have refused to leave the Box, feeling that the game world is a much better home for them than the real world ever was, and a few people have even been hospitalized after spending so much time in the game that they forgot to take care of their normal bodily functions such as eating. But the most widely publicized event involving the Virtual Box has taken place only about a week ago. One night a 15-year-old boy named Shawn Harris was found in a coma inside of his Virtual Box. Although he is now hooked up to life support, any attempt to disconnect him from the Box causes his vitals to flatline. In addition, the Box continues to maintain an active connection to The World, almost as if Shawn was still playing the game, and any attempt to disconnect to Box from the game causes a similar near fatal incident. It is as if the game is the only thing keeping him alive at the moment.
Despite reports saying that at least 1/4 to 1/3 of gamers playing The World use the Virtual Box and CC Corp's constant assurance that nothing is wrong with the device, these events have caused a stigma to be placed upon the device's users. Those who use the Box are often ridiculed and shunned, placed into the same stereotype as those who use the box too extensively, and this has started to create segregation within certain parts of the game. Guilds have started to put in the policy that anyone using the Box would not be allowed to join and may not even enter certain areas of the root towns, and as a result many people who do own the Box have created separate secluded guilds and marked territory that only members using the Box may enter.
In addition to this, rumors have started to go around about a monster appearing in random fields and dungeons that cannot be killed and is even capable of destroying character data if fought. The administration team keeps denying that any such creature exists, but reports pop up every day of new sightings and people are starting to be banned for mentioning it on the boards. The boards and conversations of The World have been filled with talk of CC Corp's genius son, the ideas behind the Virtual Box, and the events involving this mysterious monster, but the biggest question you will have to face is...just what are you going to do with your character in The World as a result of these issues?
This RP will take place in 3 acts, each with their own climax, before reaching the end of the story. The first act is called "In Pursuit of a Monster," the second act is called "In Pursuit of an Outlaw," and the third act is called "In Pursuit of a Virus." This story does have an ending and direction, so don't be afraid of it losing track.
Character Sheet
(Areas listed as * do not need to be answered. This is a game after all and the player has the choice to conceal his or her real life from other players.)
Character Name: (What is your character called within The World?)
Character Gender: (What is the gender of the game character?)
Character Class: (What class is your character within the game? Due to this taking place during the original version of The World, only the original classes are available: Blademaster, Heavy Axeman, Heavy Blade, Long Arm, Twin Blade, and Wavemaster.)
Character Appearance: (What does your character look like? Any appearance other than the normal human appearance designates a hacked character and will limit your abilities and areas you can travel to due to being pursued by the administration team.)
*Player Name: (What is the name of the person at the computer playing the character in The World?)*
*Player Age: (What is the age of the person playing the game?)*
*Player Gender: (What is the gender of the person playing the game?)*
Do you use the Virtual Box? (Yes, no, or say that you would rather keep it a secret.)
History: (What is the history of your character? This includes the history of the character in the game as well as the person playing the character. While you do need to give some history of the character in the game, giving the history of the player at the computer is optional for those who wish to keep that part a secret until later in the story.)
(Player levels will not be specified here. To make things simpler and to make people more even in power everyone is assumed to be around the same level. You may choose to have your level lower than others as an element of your character, but you are not allowed to be stronger.)
Mails
This is a game after all, so you do have the option of sending mails to others if you wish to. If you do that, however, you need to place the mail in a quote and write down who it is being sent to. Example:
Mail to: Name1, Name2, Name3...
Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah something happens.
Rules:
1. Your character is not a god. If you become too powerful within the game it shows evidence of hacking and the administration team will remove you (a.k.a. no godmoding).
2. Do not take control of characters other than your own. You may create and use temporary, unimportant NPCs but none that are crucial to the overall plot. I, however, will sometimes control your character to further along the story. Shiori will also be helping me with this when I am not around, so she may take control of your character at some point just to move things along.
3. Posts that contribute to the actual story must be at least 1 paragraph long. Something that is only 1 sentence long doesn't really add to the story and is mostly a wasted post.
4. We all make mistakes while writing, but please keep your posts at least somewhat legible. brokin spek not mak 4 gud reding ya.
5. Players are only allowed one character in this RP. This is to allow a single character to have more depth and purpose in the RP instead of being that random dude who appears every so often.
6. You ARE playing a video game—you do not exist within The World. That means that your body and real life outside of the game has certain needs too. You can't stay logged on 24/7 and are expected to leave at points to fulfill real life needs and to sleep.
7. Do not make your character too special. I don't want to have several people who defeated onetime events and got specials powers and so on. Anything special you might gain will happen over the course of the RP for story purposes.
8. If you will be absent for a night or two, you are able to leave control of your character with someone else in the RP. Just post who your are lending your character too in the thread so that people don't think that any rules are being broken.
9. Have fun playing!
I will be starting this RP either Sunday night or Monday night, depending on how many people we get. When I put in the first post it's open for people to do whatever they want in The World.
