.hack//VIRUS (RP)

Post by Hybrid »

Introduction

This RP takes place outside of the normal .hack continuity. All major events that take place within the games has not happened within the universe of this RP (mainly because I don't know the entire story yet :P ). The only similarities between this and the .hack series is that it takes place in the same setting (The World with CC Corp as its leader). This will take place within the original World, with the same mechanics as in the original .hack games and the SIGN anime. Anything added in G.U. and beyond will not be here, because I haven't played any of those games yet so I don't fully understand what has been changed.

Background Story

The Word, created by CC Corp, has become the most popular MMO in the world, with over 20 million subscribers. In addition, CC Corp's Altimit Operating System has also become very popular, competing with Windows for the most widely used around the world. Much of this success has been contributed to the corporation's so-called Super Boy, Gary Pluto, the 17-year-old genius son of the corporation's head, Hank Pluto, who has worked on and even solely created many of CC Corp's newest technological advancements. The most popular of these products is called the Virtual Box. The Virtual Box is a large box that, when players enter it and allow it to connect to their brainwaves, can simulate the actual senses one would experience if he or she physically existed inside The World.

Such a device hasn't gone without its controversy though. Not long after the device's release many people began using it rather extensively, spending more time within the game world than in their real life. There have been cases where people have refused to leave the Box, feeling that the game world is a much better home for them than the real world ever was, and a few people have even been hospitalized after spending so much time in the game that they forgot to take care of their normal bodily functions such as eating. But the most widely publicized event involving the Virtual Box has taken place only about a week ago. One night a 15-year-old boy named Shawn Harris was found in a coma inside of his Virtual Box. Although he is now hooked up to life support, any attempt to disconnect him from the Box causes his vitals to flatline. In addition, the Box continues to maintain an active connection to The World, almost as if Shawn was still playing the game, and any attempt to disconnect to Box from the game causes a similar near fatal incident. It is as if the game is the only thing keeping him alive at the moment.

Despite reports saying that at least 1/4 to 1/3 of gamers playing The World use the Virtual Box and CC Corp's constant assurance that nothing is wrong with the device, these events have caused a stigma to be placed upon the device's users. Those who use the Box are often ridiculed and shunned, placed into the same stereotype as those who use the box too extensively, and this has started to create segregation within certain parts of the game. Guilds have started to put in the policy that anyone using the Box would not be allowed to join and may not even enter certain areas of the root towns, and as a result many people who do own the Box have created separate secluded guilds and marked territory that only members using the Box may enter.

In addition to this, rumors have started to go around about a monster appearing in random fields and dungeons that cannot be killed and is even capable of destroying character data if fought. The administration team keeps denying that any such creature exists, but reports pop up every day of new sightings and people are starting to be banned for mentioning it on the boards. The boards and conversations of The World have been filled with talk of CC Corp's genius son, the ideas behind the Virtual Box, and the events involving this mysterious monster, but the biggest question you will have to face is...just what are you going to do with your character in The World as a result of these issues?

This RP will take place in 3 acts, each with their own climax, before reaching the end of the story. The first act is called "In Pursuit of a Monster," the second act is called "In Pursuit of an Outlaw," and the third act is called "In Pursuit of a Virus." This story does have an ending and direction, so don't be afraid of it losing track. :D

Character Sheet

(Areas listed as * do not need to be answered. This is a game after all and the player has the choice to conceal his or her real life from other players.)

Character Name: (What is your character called within The World?)
Character Gender: (What is the gender of the game character?)
Character Class: (What class is your character within the game? Due to this taking place during the original version of The World, only the original classes are available: Blademaster, Heavy Axeman, Heavy Blade, Long Arm, Twin Blade, and Wavemaster.)
Character Appearance: (What does your character look like? Any appearance other than the normal human appearance designates a hacked character and will limit your abilities and areas you can travel to due to being pursued by the administration team.)
*Player Name: (What is the name of the person at the computer playing the character in The World?)*
*Player Age: (What is the age of the person playing the game?)*
*Player Gender: (What is the gender of the person playing the game?)*
Do you use the Virtual Box? (Yes, no, or say that you would rather keep it a secret.)
History: (What is the history of your character? This includes the history of the character in the game as well as the person playing the character. While you do need to give some history of the character in the game, giving the history of the player at the computer is optional for those who wish to keep that part a secret until later in the story.)

(Player levels will not be specified here. To make things simpler and to make people more even in power everyone is assumed to be around the same level. You may choose to have your level lower than others as an element of your character, but you are not allowed to be stronger.)

Mails

This is a game after all, so you do have the option of sending mails to others if you wish to. If you do that, however, you need to place the mail in a quote and write down who it is being sent to. Example:
Mail to: Name1, Name2, Name3...

Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah something happens.

Rules:
1. Your character is not a god. If you become too powerful within the game it shows evidence of hacking and the administration team will remove you (a.k.a. no godmoding).
2. Do not take control of characters other than your own. You may create and use temporary, unimportant NPCs but none that are crucial to the overall plot. I, however, will sometimes control your character to further along the story. Shiori will also be helping me with this when I am not around, so she may take control of your character at some point just to move things along.
3. Posts that contribute to the actual story must be at least 1 paragraph long. Something that is only 1 sentence long doesn't really add to the story and is mostly a wasted post.
4. We all make mistakes while writing, but please keep your posts at least somewhat legible. brokin spek not mak 4 gud reding ya.
5. Players are only allowed one character in this RP. This is to allow a single character to have more depth and purpose in the RP instead of being that random dude who appears every so often.
6. You ARE playing a video game—you do not exist within The World. That means that your body and real life outside of the game has certain needs too. You can't stay logged on 24/7 and are expected to leave at points to fulfill real life needs and to sleep.
7. Do not make your character too special. I don't want to have several people who defeated onetime events and got specials powers and so on. Anything special you might gain will happen over the course of the RP for story purposes.
8. If you will be absent for a night or two, you are able to leave control of your character with someone else in the RP. Just post who your are lending your character too in the thread so that people don't think that any rules are being broken.
9. Have fun playing!

I will be starting this RP either Sunday night or Monday night, depending on how many people we get. When I put in the first post it's open for people to do whatever they want in The World. :D

My Character

Character Name: Avantha
Character Gender: Female
Character Class: Twin Blade
Character Appearance:
Image
Player Name: Secret
Player Age: Secret
Player Gender: Secret
Do you use the Virtual Box? Secret, although her play style makes people suspect that she does.
History: Not much is known about the person who plays Avantha. She is often very secretive and pushes away others who attempt to get close to her. Although she is seen a lot roaming the root towns, she is almost never seen in the company of anyone else. While her desire is for nobody to know of her existence, this play style has had an opposite effect. Her name has spread through rumors as being one of the few people having leveled through the game entirely alone, even in dungeons others would find difficult in groups. This has caused people to wonder just how skilled she really is and for others to think that she is just a hacker who deserves to be turned over to the administration team. It is rumored that she does not have a single member address from another player despite people constantly pestering her to share the secrets of her success.

Character Name: Kali
Character Gender: Female
Character Class: Wavemaster
Character Appearance: http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs16/f/2007/ ... eNinja.png
*Player Name: Kali*
*Player Age: 16*
*Player Gender: Female*
Do you use the Virtual Box? Yes
History: Kali is a rather free-spirited person. She often doesn't care much of what others think of her, which is why she used her real name for her character and why she never attempts to hide how she plays the game. She is a very artistic person, and always tries to be optimistic and understanding in a situation, because she knows what it's like to feel alone.

Come with me in the twilight of a summers night for a while.
Tell me of a story never ever told in the past.
Take me back to the land,
Where my yearnings were born.
The key to open the door is in your hand.

Do you use the Virtual Box? Yes
History: Another user of the Virtual Box. She finds refuge in the world and refuses half the time to leave. Life is hard for offline. Always being bullied and picked on. What friends she has offline are becoming worried about her. Online however her character Balthier is a popular character and has many friends. The difference between reality and Fantasy is becoming blurred for her. When she is offline she keeps forgetting that her real name is Josette and not Balthier.

[Updated]
Character Name: Gibken
Character Gender: Male
Character Class: Long Arm
Character Appearance: Image
His weapon: Image
*Player Name: Riki Honoo
*Player Age: 15
*Player Gender: Male
Do you use the Virtual Box?- No (But the character has started to become tempted)
History: The person behind Gibken is a semi-mature guy, while he's known to be calm and collected he has a childish side to him and as a result is often seen as a teenage superhero of sorts, to his friends anyways. His play style is "go with the flow" however if he has a goal in mind, he will go to almost near extreme lengths to finish it. He tries to be well rounded in both combat, magic, and healing skills, and is a well skill equipped player.

sure count me in. I'll modify this later. It's too early/late right now.

Edit: alright, lets do this.

Character Name: Eria
Character Gender: Female
Character Class: Heavyblade
Character Appearance:
Image
*Player Name: "Neko"
*Player Age: secret
*Player Gender: secret
Do you use the Virtual Box?: Yes
History: A long time player of the World, Eria enjoys playing to help other as well as growing stronger and can usually be found roaming fields to train or help other players in need. Though a borderline addict of the Box, her mannerisms and carefree nature makes it difficult to tell if she's really using a box unless asked, to which she'll admit that she is with the same smile she nearly always has on her face. Eria has met with Seige on a few occassions, a more notable one when he came to help her against some powerful monsters, inadvertently leading to the spread of many rumors about him and even a few about herself.

Do you use the Virtual Box? Secret
History: a game-freak guy who played all PC games, and unlocked all secrets, except for 'The World' he tries to do it with this one too, but the monsters that are said that can delete your character, wich he calls 'Bugs' interfeere, and he is now trying to help at deleting them, same as Avantha, he is a 'solo' player, but he has member adresses, he helps them to level up, and, it is said that he was lvl 1 and came to a lvl 10 dungeon and completed it without being killed, of course, those are only rumors, other rumors say that he is a high-level player, others that he is only a lvl 10 with luck, and others... That he uses the box, there's some people that get's in contract with him to level up in exchange of money, he is oftenly seen in 'newbies' Root towns, but he wanders around like 20-30 lvl root towns, no one knows his lvl, being a game-freak helped him to know how to hide his level, he posted in 'The World' forums that he would be in Mac Anu for an entire day, except for the night, so that if someone wanted to level up founded him in there, he also knows Eria, he meet her in a dungeon and helped her to defeat some monsters, never knowing that since that fight, so much rumors about him would go around

Of course, but it's always good to have more than one option if you wish for your character to remain with the group for the duration, or if we're in the middle of a fight scene and it would be too weird to have him just say "hey logging out now. Have fun with the epic battle." :P

GamerKale sent this character to me. Now that I think about it, it might have worked better for me to put all the characters in one post. Meh, I can do that later.
Character Name: D-=Scythe
Character Gender: Female
Character Class: Longarm
Character Appearance: http://tatah-chan.deviantart.com/art/De ... eath&qo=23
*Player Name: James Carter
*Player Age: 21
*Player Gender: Male
Do you use the Virtual Box? It's a case by case basis thing, some days he feels like using it other days he doesn't.
History: He tried several different versions of the word “Deathscythe” before he found one he could use, hence the strange spelling. Although he plays a female character he uses his real voice. He doesn't try to trick people, he just feels that if he's going to look at a character model for who knows how many hours, he'd prefer to look at a female one. Also, he has modified his game slightly so that his spear looks like a scythe, but only on his screen thus nobody's taken note of it yet.

James enjoys mysteries and refuses to just tell anyone what he does, whether or not on any given day he's using the box, or much of anything else. This has made him friends, and enemies, who belong to several guilds, although he himself has refused to join any guild except for brief periods to do guild only events with his friends.

(And it shall begin! I wrote this yesterday and did some editing on it. It's not as good as my other writing, but the nature of it being an RP means I kind of have to gloss over a few areas. I do think this works best as a way of introducing what the actual atmosphere in the game is right now. Enjoy and start messing around with your character!)

Act I: In Pursuit of a Monster

It was morning and the dawning sun was just creeping over the edges of the buildings in the canal town of Mac Anu. Its orange and yellow beams washed over the streets and canals, seeming to make everything glow with the warmth of a campfire. The canals sparkled and gleamed in the growing light, hypnotizing any who stopped to take a long enough look. The streets were already growing abuzz with players trading, forming groups for dungeons, or simply conversing about the latest events across the planet. But Avantha did not notice anyone. She stood on a bridge over looking one of the canals, resting her elbows on the railing as she leaned over towards the water below. People laughed and yelled on the streets behind her as they prepared for another day within The World, but she did her best to ignore all of the commotion and focus on the beauty before her. No matter what was going on in the game or in the real world, she always tried to be on in the morning to watch the dazzling sight of the emerging day. Sure, it was only a virtual sun in a virtual world, but she always felt the need to watch the wonderful and warming sight that the graphics artists had made. Perhaps watching the event every day when others simply passed by was her way of thanking the artists, like sitting through the credits after a movie had ended.

A few people walked across the bridge, but they stopped their conversation long enough to give her a glance. She tried to hide her face, not wanting anyone to approach her. She didn't think she did a very good job, but the passerby got the message and moved along without a word. She wasn't sure how long she stood there or how many people glanced over as they passed over the bridge behind her back, but she did not really care. She ignored people most of the time anyways, and this day was turning out to be as generic as the others. But one thing that was not generic was the conversation which caught her attention. She turned and gazed down the road to see three people in the midst of a fierce exchange. Two of them were Heavy Axemen in similar armor, standing on either side of the alleyway leading into one of the town's largest markets as if guarding the path. The third person was a female Wavemaster who apparently was attempting to enter the market.

"But what do you mean I can't enter?" said the Wavemaster. "This is a free market. What gives you the right to exclude people?"

"This section of the town is only for people who don't use the Virtual Box," said one of the Heavy Axemen, not moving from his post.

"More like idiot box," said the second Axeman, and the first snorted in response.

"But I never said that I use that thing," said the Wavemaster. "So I don't see what the big deal is."

"You never said you didn't use it," said the first Axeman. "You are only allowed in here if you can prove that you do not own the Box."

"So I'm not allowed to have fun in this game because I won't let you in on my personal life?" said the Wavemaster. "That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard."

"Those are the rules," said the Axeman. "If you don't like it then get lost."

"Screw you guys," said the Wavemaster. "I pay for this game so I should be allowed to go wherever I want. It's not like you can do anything to stop me."

The Wavemaster made her way towards the alley entrance, but the first Axeman pushed her back. "We said you aren't allowed here," he said. "If you want to use your idiot box then go ahead, but we don't want your kind here. Why don't you go to the other side of town? I hear there's a place just for you losers over there."

"Don't call me a loser, you jerk," said the Wavemaster. She cast a spell before the Axeman knew what was going on and he was thrown against the wall. "Now get out of my way," she said. "I'm going into the market whether you like it or not."

"If you want a fight then I'll give you a fight," said the Axeman. He climbed to his feet just as the Wavemaster passed by, and in one swoop from his axe he diminished her health bar. Her gray body fell to the ground and disappeared a few seconds later. "That should show the loser where she belongs," said the Axeman. "Although it would be nice if she came back after she restarted. I could use some more anger management."

The second Axeman said nothing, but pointed over to the nearby bridge where Avantha was still standing and watching. She didn't flinch as both men turned to face her.

"It looks like I won't have to wait after all," said the first Axeman. He walked onto the bridge and stopped in front of the Twin Blade, his axe held in his hand and ready to strike. He was twice her size, but she didn't move once. "What are you staring at?" said the Axeman.

"Just another average idiot," said Avantha. She sighed and turned back to the canal waters. The boats had already begun their programmed paths throughout the town, and she watched as they drifted through the waters and under the bridges.

"Do you have a problem with the way we run things?" said the Axeman, trying to make his voice sound more intimidating.

"I never said that I did," said Avantha, her voice flat and bored.

"Well you better not have a problem," said the Axeman. "We're just treating those fat losers like the scum they are. They're wasting their lives in those stupid boxes when there's so much more to do in life."

"And yet you're the one standing guard at an alleyway all day," said Avantha. "I always wondered why exactly you people enjoyed sitting at your computer staring at the same street all day. I suppose the weapons and gold your guild mates give you make it somewhat worth it, but it always seemed stupid to me. But, hey, you've got to find some use for the stupid rocks, don't you?"

The Axeman was silent for a moment, too shocked and dumbstruck to think of a comeback. "You...you better take that back," said the Axeman. "I don't like the way you said that."

"Oh, did I hurt your feelings?" said Avantha. "Let me give you some advice that my father always gives me: get over it you pathetic kid. The world isn't your pillow and it won't comfort you. If you need to cry, I suggest you log out of the game first so people don't laugh at you."

Avantha turned to walk away, but the Axeman blocked her path, his weapon raised above his head. "That's it," he said. "You're dead. Let's see how funny you think I am when I kill you every time you gate into town."

Avantha sighed and shook her head. "Do we really have to do this?" she said. The Axeman swung his weapon at her, but she jumped back and avoided the attack. "Well, if you really want to," she said. "But let me give you one more word of advice: for next time, when you challenge someone to a duel, I suggest you heal yourself back to full first."

The Axeman figured out what she was talking about far too late. She thrust her dagger into his chest and finished off what little health he had remaining in one hit. The second Axeman took a step towards the bridge as he watched his comrade fall, but he seemed too nervous to leave his post at the alleyway. Avantha walked away from the bridge before the body of the Axeman had hit the ground and didn't glance back once. She stopped on another bridge not too far away and resumed her task of watching the rising sun glisten on the canal waters. She knew it was going to be a busy day today, but she wanted at least a few more minutes of relaxation before she had to get to work.

I guess I should have clarified. I was just sending it to see if there were any adjustments I needed to make. Meh, it's posted so it doesn't matter.
As long as the majority of them are all on the first page, they're easy enough to find. However, if more people join later, you may wish to add their characters to one of your posts on this page. By the by, your link on my character's appearance isn't working.

Dawn didn't creep up on James, despite it's best efforts, he was already up and moving. He had some time so he logged into The World he had only just materialized in Mac Anu and the first thing to greet him was a wavemaster getting chopped in half. He cringed at the sight of it, such an unfair match at close range. When he saw the axeman start making his way to the girl on the bridge he raised an eyebrow. This was the starting root town, but that didn't mean people here were low level. And if you get careless, you get dead, as this guy was about to find out. He was probably about as dumb as his character looked given that he had failed to take note that this particular character was almost always here at this time of day and it had been that way for quite a while. Deathscythe moved over to a stall and entered a menu.

James raised his visor and looked out at the rising sun. He didn't often take the time to watch it, but that ever vigilant sentinel of the dawn had made him want to see it. The in game art was good, a virtual box made it even better, but accept no substitute if you're looking for a sunrise or sunset for that matter. Like the son of flynn said, there's no comparison. His interest sated he slipped the visor back on and exited the menu. When he looked back at the previous scene, the axeman was stepping onto the bridge again, but from the opposite side this time and the sentinel was long gone.

She stepped onto the bridge, mimicking the girl's actions, trying to get into her mindset as it were, to figure out where she would have gone from here. The axeman from before was being quite loud and boisterous and Deathscythe turned to find him stomping over to her. His friend had clearly goaded him into something. She looked down at where she was standing. Ah, he's pushing his luck a second time? She wouldn't be letting him get as close as he wanted without issue though. A "scythe" appeared in her hands and she twirled it about. "You don't want to be killed a second time in five minutes, do you?" Threatened James. The axeman seemed to rethink his decision and backed off, maybe it was the fact that she was armed already, maybe it was the fact that she seemed to know his intentions, or maybe it was her voice. PKs, specifically men, often used female character models to make others underestimate them. The weapon disappeared and Deathscythe looked back at the now risen sun.

Player Name: Chiaki Tani
Player Age: 22
Player Gender: Male
Do you use the Virtual Box? “Not at all, dude it’s just a game. I don't need a real ass-whooping.”
History: Voltic is a quester who wishes nothing less than to beat the game. He often plays online games, but realizes the difference between game and life. He will log out randomly, but will also jump in to assist whenever called upon. Chiaki is a college student who dreams of motocross. He is not very bright; but at the same time, he is not flunking either. He does not study much, but always tries his hardest for school, since his mother is paying for him. Chiaki has a younger sister who plays The World, but they do not play together, because they “get enough of each other” in the real world.
