Reach

Post by Dimitri »

So, who's bought the new Halo game Reach? For those who haven't heard much about it, it's a prequel to the original Halo game and is fairly interesting. Bunch of new armor and abilities, story mode's pretty good, and of course billions of hours of online play.

Best part is Forge World IMO.

If this game focusses more on the story and gameplay innovation than the multiplayer, I'mma be happy.
If not, it's going straight on my 'do not want' list.

Put it in your do not want list then. I enjoyed the story more than others, but its fairly short and the draw is multiplayer.

I haven't bought it but my friend owns it and I've played it a couple of times.

I don't think Halo is good without the multiplayer aspect.
The gameplay against the computers just isn't fun to me at all.

I hope they focus on the xbl aspect.

I haven't finished the campaign yet, but from what I've played of it this doesn't seem to try to innovate or change the formula at all for the Halo franchise. This is very much a game made for the fans and not a leap into the unknown. The campaign is very much like Halo 3's was except that they've incorporated the squad-based gameplay of ODST. This isn't to say that your squad will be of much use, but they'll be there to draw fire from time to time... even if it's your own. Since you are a Spartan again this means you can take some damage before you go down, a key different from ODST where you were supposed to be a "normal" elite special forces soldier. If you've ever played a first-person shooter before, then I would recommend playing this game on Heroic because Normal poses no real challenge and that will make these repetitive firefights an incredibly monotonous chore.

What Reach really focused on was the multiplayer. Being Bungie's (supposed) last Halo game, this was their attempt at perfecting the Halo multiplayer system that they've already narrowed down to a science. I haven't spent a lot of time with it yet because I've been distracted by Civilization V, but it looks a lot like Halo 3. Again, this game is not trying to be adventurous at all. One thing it does add, though, is a large number of customizable gameplay features that let you create your own gametypes for multiplayer games. While the overwhelming majority of the player creations will be complete sh*t, I'm sure that there were be numerous gems that could become widespread.

tl;dr - The campaign is okay. It doesn't try to change the series much, but the multiplayer has some new stuff that is worth checking out if you still play Halo online. This is definitely a game for the fans.

I wouldn't go that far. At least Reach isn't a totally broken game.

Naw, I'd have to side with LDK on that note. Halo Reach is nothing more but the same old formula for the past couple of years. :/ Since I've played CoD so much, I'm not used to the slower action in Halo.

I've played Reach, and it is a very nice game. It is balanced, and the story is well thought out. Forge World is a great feature to the game. It lets the imagination of people run wild so that they can create stages.
