Fullmetal Panic! is substantially different because it's:
-Less popular
-Has been handled by different studios on a per-season basis from different sources and there may be a situation regarding renewing rights. Kyoto Animation may have decided it's too expensive to make real FMP!, too, since they're cheap as hell...
-Has a different and much more complicated source material situation: Whenever FMP! has ended, it has had only one season or less worth of buffer material remaining. Haruhi started out with a lot of source material in the pipeline...

It's less popular than Haruhi. I'm not saying it's unpopular, but I don't think at any point FMP! has reached the same heights of popularity that Haruhi did, in either the U.S. or Japan...

- Wasn't it just the first season that was done by a different studio? I was under the impression that the rights to it were just in the hands of KyoAni now. They made the other two seasons after the first, at least.

I'm pretty sure there's no way to verify this particular agreement, but usually it seems that there are shows where studios will be contracted on a season-by-season basis. KyoAni did Fumoffu, but that was based on the manga. All I'm saying is that there could be complications relating to doing another season... If I was a producer for the show, I'd be asking around at Gonzo or Madhouse, but that's me...

- Huh? The first season adapted books 1-3 and The Second Raid adapted books 4 and 5. We haven't touched anything beyond that point and there are 10 books out there. That leaves half the currently told story unadapted. When the first season of the anime started there were already 5 books out in the series, so Full Metal Panic started out with a lot of source material. Not to mention all the various side-stories and gags that have been released that could potentially work towards another "season" like Fumoffu.

At the end of the first season the only novels they hadn't covered were what became The Second Raid. They could have done it then, it probably broke down for some other reason, but after that they would have had to stop, which wouldn't affect your current situation of waiting for more, because: by the time The Second Raid actually was made, there were only two remaining novels, which probably wasn't enough to make a full season from. Now, by the time the OVA came out there was enough material, but they probably held off so that people would buy the mind-shatteringly expensive DVD box, and then the mind-shatteringly expensive Blu-ray box, which explains us to all the way to 2009. At this point in time, however, I got nothing...

Unless I am not understanding what you mean with that last one. But I'd say FMP has just as much material and reason to get another adaptation. Especially now that Haruhi finally got it's second season.

It does now, certainly, but it had more reason to stop for several years than Haruhi did. That's all I'm saying, otherwise I feel you pain. Honestly I like FMP! way more than Haruhi, it's just one of them stopped for much more obvious reasons than the other. It's way better than them going on and making up their own story, though, and I wasn't a huge fan of Fumoffu...

Seems the intermingled the new season with the old one. But I could care less. Haruhi is back, and AT can take a break from being gawd for a while.

I kept hearing that this "New Season" was just a re-airing of the first season.
Good to know there's actually new material besides an OP and ED.
I might actually watch it now, though, I do wonder if it has anything to do with "The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya" which was where I thought they were going to go with the story from the end of Season 1.
But from what I hear its not...

This series has notoriety for it not being broadcasted in chronological order. And if you look at my previous post, you'll see the order in which episodes will air. The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya are the last six episodes of the "season".

It's an alias so that he didn't have to give the young Haruhi his real name. He says it's an alias.

Because it's obvious that a Japanese person wouldn't be named John Smith.

Kyero, John Smith is a common American "everman" name. As in it takes two of the most common american male names and creates the perfect bland name. In Kyon's case, telling Haruhi his name is John Smith is basically telling her he isn't going to tell her his real name and is thus just giving an alias.

Azure Knight, did you really think only Disappearance is enough to fill a 13 episode season? The first season wasn't just Melancholy, it had several other stories. Since they seem to be airing everything in chronological order this time, it's a safe assumption that something will be done with Sighs if they intend to do Disappearance.

Oh, and it IS being aired weekly, it's just being aired with the first season in chronological order. Meaning that the episode that just aired takes place before some of the episodes from the first season so they are airing those reruns before we can get to more new episodes. In complete contrast to the out-of-order first airing of the first season, they are airing the second season in such a chronological fashion that they are actually repeating episodes in order to get the order exact.

What I was saying was that I didn't know that they were going to have the whole story of Sigh in the new season. I thought they'd just have Disappearance, and take a few stories from different books like last time. Also, it seems like the episodes not from Sigh or Disappearance are going to cover the rest of Boredom and Rashness (3 and 5 respectively).

I second the gender-swap OVA. Seeing how popular the fad's become, I think fans would really enjoy an episode like that.
