Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Post by Akuta »

The old topic was old enough to be borderline necromancy, so here's a new one instead xD

I'll throw out some news and interesting tidbits for your reading pleasure:

- The Release date is September 16th in the US, 17th in Australia and 19th in Europe.
- Time-wise, the game is set in the time period between Episode III and Episode IV. This is the time known as the Great Purge, where Darth Vader worked to exterminate all Jedi.
To quote the novel:
"Kudos to Haden Blackman for a killer script, and George Lucas for allowing the window onto the Dark Times to open...at last."
- The main character is a secret apprentice Darth Vader has raised for the purpose of hunting down the last remaining Jedi. He has been given the codename "Starkiller". No witnesses allowed at any cost, because Vader doesn't even want the Emperor to know about Starkiller.

- The "main game" is an Xbox 360/PS3 game

- There is a less graphics and physics heavy version made for PS2 and ported to Wii, with a new controller layout and exclusive one on one offline duel mode for the Wii version. The PS2 version of the game also has a few extra maps, including the Jedi Temple, included in the storyline to give an incentive for getting that version of the game.
- It should be noted that the PS2/Wii versions of the game still uses Euphoria and Havok for animation and physics, only to a milder extent.

- A version very similar to the PS2 version is made for the PSP, but this version also has 4 player ad-hoc multiplayer and a special "Historical Missions" mode, where classic moments from the two trilogies are played out (you get to pick who to play as in the duel in question), but with the amped up and "unleashed" force powers this game has. Luke throwing Darth Vader into a wall and crushing him with the Emperor's Chair? Let's hope so :D

- There is also a DS version of the game that I know close to nothing about. My guess is that it is the PSP version with lower graphics quality. What I do know is that the touch screen will be used to string together combos and use force powers.

- A demo for the Xbox 360/PS3 version of the game will be put on Xbox Live/PSN "Sometime in August". It has been said that it won't be this week, but there's still a chance it'll be put up next week.

- August 19th is the release date for a novel that covers the entire game. It has the same name as the game.
- Awesomely fun truth: A certain Swedish bookstore broke the street date on the book and just put it up for sale right away, despite their own website showing the release date as August 19th.
Based on the fact that I now have this lovely book, I can tell you this:

- The game appears to have way more twists and turns than the trailers so far have revealed (yes, even the one that makes everyone think they know how the story will turn out). The theme of the story may be "Redemption", but there will clearly be a lot more betrayals and surprises before that happens.
- The game does indeed have Starkiller return to several locations multiple times and going by how long the book is and how much the story twists around, it appears that it will be longer than you might first expect it to be.

So, what do you guys think about it? In my opinion, it is shaping up to be the best Star Wars Experience so far and possibly even one of my favorite games of all time. I hope I'm not wrong xD
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Being a wonderfully pessimistic individual, I expect the game to be a disappointment based on absolutely nothing. I will try the game and if I hate it, I lose nothing, if I like it, then great I got to play a good game and may just buy it.

I could give two shits about the Star Wars mythos and the story of this game, but the gameplay really looks promising. I'll probably give it a shot; hopefully, it isn't a disappointment, like most other SW games (KotOR aside).

Demo's okay. I had fun, but I feel like it loses its charm quickly and gets repetitive. I probably won't be buying this until it's around 20 bucks.

Its the Demo silly -_-; Instead of just waiting, you should look around and see what people are saying about it. When it comes out of course.

...Right, I know it's the demo, and it didn't blow me away. I'm not paying $60 for this, when there are so many other games coming out that I'd rather have.

I don't really rent games, so if I do ever get it, I'd rather just buy it used when it'll inevitably be around or under $15 in a year or two. I did have fun for the first few minutes of the demo, but, like I said, I found it underwhelming. Doesn't help that the game's been receiving a tremendous amount of hype for a while now. Star Wars buffs, though, will probably eat it up.

kind of sad that it's been so long since we had a Star Wars with LIGHTSABERS being used by the PC.
Looking forward to this! :D

I think I might get it. You have to appreciate the open-endedness of what you can do. Do I throw the incoming TIE fighter at my enemies, or do I bend this girder to be in its path? I was a huge fan of the Jedi Knight games, but they were still based on FPS mechanics and nothing like what we saw in the movies. The only thing JK had that's absent here is severed appendages. Seriously, I can bend metal in an arbitrary fashion but my saber passes through a guy with no effect? Is this ESRB-related or something? It's Star Wars, saber dismemberment is pretty much its most sacred tradition...

It's seriously shipping in a month, though? That might lower my opinion. The demo was on the glitchy side. I shot a barrel in between two fully-closed doors, and then another time, by gripping a barrel at the bottom of a stack I managed to get a grip on nothing. And move it around. Way to go. It still has a bit of an "in development" vibe... Still, the idea of throwing the trees around on Kashyyyk is hard to pass up...

You should give the demo a few more spins and experiment a bit more with combining abilities and attacks. The gameplay is surprisingly deep, even though the demo limits you to very low levels of the abilities.

Visiting the gamefaqs or lucasforums is pretty annoying by now. There're tons posts from people complaining about the game because it isn't another Jedi Knight game <.<

Apparently, every Star Wars jedi game needs decapacitation and the Jedi Knight gameplay -.-
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

There is a lot you can do combination-wise, but I still wasn't feeling it.

I love JK, but it's always had a lot of fps baggage it doesn't need, awkwardly linked to strange "magic spell" force abilities no one has ever heard of. I like this game better in that regard, but it does need dismemberment. Someone gets something cut off in pretty much every movie...

Not only that, but there's not even any realistic damage, which sucks. Going by the trailers, I thought the game was going to display damage and severed areas exactly where you hit them, but as seen in the demo boss fight, it's all just scripted, when the game prompts you to press a few buttons in succession, and the game takes over after that. You can slash **** to oblivion, but you would never even know by looking at the enemy. Kind of disappointing for a game that uses the Havok engine well. :/ I didn't realize lightsabers are apparently glow-in-the-dark wooden sticks. :p
