I read somewhere that eventually you are able to customize 5 star items, is this true?
Well, thats true. You can customize 5-star items after some time in the game.
It may be spoiler i think, so im gonna put the tags on these.
After your party have decided to defeat Cubia's minions while Zelkova searches for Cubia in Net Slum, the feature will be unlocked in your @home. Your @home will be transferred to Net Slum by that time.
U can customize by using an item, like how u feed your lost weapons with virus cores. The item can only be obtained through Area Hacking, which Pi will teach u due to Sakaki's Serpent of Lore(Sakaki have taken control of G.U. at that time) U can collect up to 99 of them, but u need 5 for each upgrade. This upgrade is quite unique for the dual guns as the max ammo increases by 2 for each upgrade, so if u have a DG-0 with lvl 5, u can burst your enemies with 18 hits before reloading.

Let me see if I understand this correctly: by area hacking, you get special items. these items are given to your 5 star rare items 5 at a time. this upgrades their stats?

I think i didnt explain properly, so i try to make it clear.
The item is actually like virus cores and adora keys, they are key items.
They are just used to customize rank 5 items.
Its does not upgrade stats, it only increases the damage ratio from 1.0x up to 1.25x depending on how many upgrades u have.
