Boss Music

Post by What the...??? »

sorry for bringing up such a useless topic, but i have to know if there is anyone who shares my feelings about this.

what do all of you think about the boss music in games. personally i get highly dissipointed with most games music selections. for me the boss song is one of the most importent aspects in the game. it's a bad sign when i have to think very hard just recall decent battle music.

this is one of the reasons that i have a hard time getting into mainstream games. most people probly focuse on things like plotline, gameplay, and secrets. most mainstream games have these. i focuse on music, color, and difficulty the most. which gets left in the dirt on the mainstreem.

i just want to hear everyones opinion. what boss songs do you think are good, bad and ugly. hear are a few of mine:

please know that there are games in the bad and ugly section that i like. i'm just refering to boss music

good
most atelier iris music
summon night swordcraft story 3, both final bosses
lumine 2nd form, megaman X8
romancing saga final boss.
veiwtiful joe 2 final boss
bomberman generation boss music
theme song music
legend of mana: pain of the universe, and the darkness nova.

bad

legend of zelda serise. (except for molgera, from wind walker)
.hack// phases
breath of fire serise
metroid serise
star ocean serise ( battle music good, boss music terrible.)
megaman serise for the most part
"tales of" games aside from a few boss and final boss tunes.
lots else that i've heard.........

downright hideous
most nes games (obviously)
marginal beast
plok

one last thing thing: how many of you think that alot of level music should be used for boss music.[/u]

Wait, you declare the boss music from Infection, or better yet "Skeith's Battle Theme" and "Cubia's Theme" in the bad category? I should lock this thread and ban you where you stand. j/k...or am I?

Though I wouldn't say all NES songs are bad, that is unless you never played Battletoads and paused the game or the final battle, all the general songs epically the dungeon theme for Zelda, or played Punch-Out in general. And about the Tales Series, none of the battle themes were great; however "Time Battle" from the ToE game, "Ability Test" from ToE game, "Leon, Irony of Fate" from ToD1 game, "Final Act" from ToP game were all quite exceptional.

Out of your "good" musics, I'd have to say only "Pain the Universe" from LoM was the only good song that came out of Seiken Densetsu series.

"most nes games (obviously)"
why obviously?
its not as if because they have 8 bit music that that automatically means the music music has to suck :/
if you're not basing the music on how well the music enhances the experience but just quality of the music alone instead, then i cant agree with your opinions :( lol

Quite frankly, good sire. I am offended at the fact that you called the Phase themes bad. But to call the ZELDA music bad aswell? You must have a silly party going on inside your head.

NES themes bad? Dude, look what they had to work with. Some composers really pushed the limits back then, and when some of their work from that age is orchestrated and updated in today's age, it can sound pretty damn good. Just look at Uematsu. Just because there wasn't enough technology to make game music sound like it does today doesn't mean it's bad, in the least.

That being said, personal favorite selection of boss music: Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

Whoah, the Phases music is bad!? I love those! And the Metroid series had some cool ones. The older boss music had a sci-fi horror ring to it. And sometimes the older/less technological music is awesome. "Kraids Hideout" (Metroid) is my most memorable song, and it's NES.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moons, in my opinion, had some of the best music out of the GBA games. And the final boss theme "Proof of Blood" is really great. They even used "Vampire Killer" as the last stages theme, which fit the mood perfectly.

Also, "Betrayal" for the 2nd to last Boss fight from Silent Hill 2 is perfect for the mood and setting. The boss fight is even harder than the final boss. I love that fight the most. I'm really fond of Video Game music, new and old.

Also, some level themes would be cool for a fight. Like uhh... "Vampire Killer" from C:CotM. That's from the top of my head. But it's probably better because boss fights usually don't last too long...

i'm not juging nes game boss music by the quality they have. i'm judging it from what the melody is. nes games did have good music, but boss music for the most part was pretty poor.

also, i'm talking about boss music, not music in general.

and since i'm here, go ahead and ban me for what i think.

legend of zelda boss music gives me a migrain.

.hack phase music has some very nice instument choices but the songs don't have any kick or momentum. and with how long the phase battles are, it can put you to sleep easily.

keep the hate mail coming everyone, i'm curious about what you veiw as a good song.

Oh, please. No need to say things like that. If you could point out these "most NES games (obviously)" specifically, then maybe I'll agree. By your "obviously" and emote, I assumed you were saying most NES games are bad because of the obvious lack of technology, producing mainly beeps and blips. There are still good compositions out there, regardless of their quality.

No one's banning you for what you think, so take it easy.

i like the song in xenosaga 3 when your fight the boss at the very beginning. i can't remember what boss it was since it was a while ago. but i do remember liking that song. (i think it was against that giant alien thing, he's either the first, second or third boss in the game)

I remember playing Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and was in Twilight Town. The first time I heard the battle theme "Sinister Sundown", I loved it. Sometimes, I would leave it on pause and just listen to it.

And then Kingdom Hearts 2 came out, and I jumped up and was like "YES, I LOVE THIS SONG!!!" while I was fighting.

"Mortvia Aqueduct" in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness is a great level theme, but it makes fighting enemies that much more fun. That's where I'd go to level up, or just fight stuff...

The best boss music goes to:

The fight against Ultima Weapon in Final Fantasy 6. Such a departure from the normal boss music one would expect, and it keeps you on your toes.

The boss music for the final boss of Final Fantasy 6. What can I say, it just rocks when you get to the last part.

Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix- the boss fight with Unknown Man ( Xemnas0. It's all mysterious, and many parts of it are subtle, yet they capture the insane power of the cloaked figure.

hmm.... what else? Well, I always liked the boss music for Shadow of the Colossus, but all the battles in that game can be considered bosses.

And, of course, all the boss music from .hack//IMOQ and GU. Who wouldn't like the .hack music?

I do share your love in boss music (and in love of a challanging game), but I don't think I share your taste.

Anyway... Phantasy Star Online, in my humble opinion, has some of the greatest boss music ever! I would turn on the game for the sole purpose of going into the options menu and listening to the songs on loop. I especially like the song for the Gryphon boss in episode two, as well as "Pray, for Idola the distorted" and "Cry, for Idola the Holy", the final boss music for Episode 1 (the boss has three-four stages, depending on what difficulty you're on. Which reminds me; I really need to beat that game on Hard mode...)

Other favourites inculde: One Winged Angel (prefer the FF:AC version, but original is awsome too)
.hack// (everything)
Legend of Zelda Wind Waker (when you fight the first four bosses again and the fight with Phantom Ganon. I love how when you deflect the energy ball the music follows with it)
Rengoku 2 (techno rox)
Dance Dance Revoluton (They have a list of songs called "Boss Rush", so I'm including it!)
Kingdom Hearts 2 (final boss mostly)
and... THE TETRIS THEME!!! *begins to sing the tetris theme*

I can't really recall any bad/ugly ones... probably because I don't really get an emotional attachment to them and therefore cannot recall them on call.

"Groing Wings", its the fianl boss music, it really fits bcause its Son (Nowe) vs. Father (Legna), because when Nowe was a little id, Legna found him and rasied him as a dragon (Legna is a dragojn) andLegna ust used him so its sad cuase Legna never cared for Nowe, bu Legna is Nowe father and raised him so, Nowe has to Kill his fater and surpass hi, to grow his woings and finaly surpass Legna. Watdchit on youtube, its sad...

The best boss music I've ever heard is from Castlevania Symphony of the Night, of course! But what do you expect from one of the best games with one of the best soundtracks <3

Michiru Yamane is my GOD.
