Well, read the title of the post. I would have to say now, that it's FFXI, especially with the Play Online mail system and chatrooms.

I'm thinking...none.
In my opinion guild wars come close, but there are next to no games where they make it obvious to the main character that they are in a game,or where there are limitless areas, etc, etc.

WOW. Guild Wars? O.o.

I'm an MMO Hoe, played ALOT of em :D. Anyways, Guild Wars is leik, nothing like it D:

The game that's REALLY similar, which isn't actually an MMO really, kind of is, is Phantasy Star Universe, similar combat, player designs.

You get 'Partner cards' (Member Adresses) Simple Mail (Short Mail) and voice chat (360) aswell as MANY other similar stuff, sometimes scary, only difference is the time area, .hack = Pastish, PSU = Futuristic.

I agree with Kiru. But FFXI is closer, but it WOULD be more fun with the battle .hack// and PSO/PSU has.

Umm.. no? I played FFXI, besides the fantasy setting and the (Terribly set up) Email and 'Desktop' the game itself was very different.

i guess its good that i've spent quite some time (offline execpt for a very rare occasion or two) playing pso for the gc, seeing as how similar it is to .hack, as a lot of my mmo "ideas" are fueled from quite soem stuff pso has XD

IMO I thought it was a prety okay game. the graphics are great and it's free!

What are you asking, in terms of populace, gameplay or graphics?

In terms of similar gameplay style and populace it would be world of warcraft. Regardless whether you refute the statement or not. Like hack the game is quite easy to get into but in the end is hard to master. You can solo (you earn less experience if you solo monsters in FFXI), you can select different races and has a rich background story and also a very very large population base, but something along the lines of ganking each other would be Ultima Online.

In WOW you have arenas and Battlegrounds, you have people you can duel. WOW have rewritten the rules of MMORPGs, which is in vein of a typical Japanese RPG.

I dont know any that are alike but i think that the new .hack games are better then the older ones and they should make the .hack fragment game available in the U.S

Id have to say it would either be FFXI or WoW. One reason is the weapon job system in XI and oriental flavor in both .hack and FFXI.

On the other hand if were going for action or the drama in .hack (like pkers) it would have to go to WoW.

In terms of gameplay and style, yeah I too have to go with Ragnarok Online. Though in todays terms, Phantasy Star Universe comes close to R2's realism if it wasn't space oriented. But you got your @Home and server transportations.
