Unfair school habits
If there's one thing I hate in this world its people who try to make school in their way better. The school boards in Florida are thinking of getting rid of recess for all elementry schoolers, and replace it for a class to study for FCAT (A huge test that high schoolers take here in Florida). I'm in high school and this doesn't effect me, but I think its wrong. They're only in elementry school for crying out loud, the only thing the school board is doing is making kids hate school quicker! In fact the one thing I hate about high school is the pressure I go through and I don't get a moment to relax! Now 8 to 10 year olds are going to go through the same thing!! I'm I the only one that thinks this is a bad idea?

FCAT is a joke of a test. I didn't have to study for it at all and I still scored 80% higher than the most people at my school. Seriously, I don't see why there has to be a class for it. The thing is, the classes you take already are what prepare you for the FCAT. Hence why it was made. To see if you're learning anything. To be honest, I think they should just get rid of the FCAT because its a waste of my time.

Amen, I don't get why we have to take some stupid test just so we can graduate. I mean we messed up on one year and they treat it as a sign of the end of the world. Now they are making elementry schools suffer, when I grow up and have kids I'm moving out of Florida.S1lentOp wrote:FCAT is a joke of a test. That's totally sickening! I got tired of taking state-wide tests when I was in third grade. They really pushed our noses into the grindstone for them, too, and they still do to this very day. (We've got yet ANOTHER state-wide test where I live coming up in April.)
I mean, it's one thing if kids have their normal curriculum interrupted slightly to study for these tests. (As an example, the last 15 minutes of my math class is devoted to studying for some of the things that are on the test we're going to take in April.) It's ANOTHER thing if you're having another period of the day taken away altogether!
I'm strongly against any schools anywhere taking away recess. My younger brother is nine years old and autistic. (Look it up if you don't know what it means.) Last year, whenever he did something "unsatisfactory," his teachers would take away his recess time for the day. This really upset my brother and left him full of energy -- energy that he channelled into throwing tantrums, yelling, and doing even more "unsatisfactory" things. Not having recess and having the threat of recess being taken away at any time left him constantly upset. Four out of five school days he came home crying or yelling about it.
Finally, my brother's teachers figured out that he could NOT have recess taken away from him, but by that time we had him transferred to another school with a more competent special education staff.
Also, I feel I must mention that having recess taken away from "normal" students has adverse effects, as well. During the transition to middle school (when we had recess taken away), you couldn't help but notice that a lot more kids were getting into trouble because they were left with too much energy at the end of the day.
Anyway, this whole recess thing has been going on for years. I think a lot of countries don't even have recess. They could just be using the test excuse to get rid of it. Personally, I don't see the point of studying for one test any longer than a month or two in advance, but apparently I'm wrong.
Here's to hoping that they decide to keep recess in Florida. (If they don't, I guess someone could get the parents in Florida to petition the idea... I think most students have seen the power of a bunch of mad moms and dads. >>;;)

I hate all these state tests and stuff. And next year is going to suck a lot. I'll have to take not only the Georgia High School Graduation Test to graduate, but I'll also have to take a writing test. It almost seems unfair to have all these classes relying on essays to test your comprehension. But as for the no recess for little kids, it's not good. I know. In first grade, I was on a much higher level than the other kids in my class, so towards the end of the day I would be sent to a second grade class and take a reading class there, while the others in my first grade class went to have recess. I dropped out of the advancement because I missed recess and being outside. Recess is necessary for little kids.

I always pass with flying colours on these stupid tests even if i don't even know anything on it, but i still think its unfair for them to spend the whole school year saying be unique be yourself now get in a tiny room where we will compare you with others on a basis set up by people who don't even know you. and wors! its being pushed on younger kids! the indescency of it all is apalling! There is no justice in what the are doing. The are merely trying to look good. They care nothing of thier students pass thier grades! When will it end?
...in short, i feel sorry for you guys in florida!

I'm sure glad to not have to deal with FCAT anymore. I dunno where they come from in preparing students to take a test rather than getting them ready for the world. I remember when I was in high school, come Jan./Feb., all schoolwork came to a grinding halt and we studied nothing but FCAT! (yes, I do live in Fla.). FCAT doesn't help prepare kids for college, nor does it train them in a specific trade either. IMO, FCAT=waste of taxpayers $$$$ and waste of time/education.
All these Superintendents and so called Education "Experts" need to take a step back and look at what they're doing. They've forgotten that a test is simply that, a test, to see what one has learned, and to see where one needs improvement. It's gotten to the point where a school's prestige is marked simply by how many tests they shove their students through, not about whether or not those students actually learn anything or do anything worthwhile with their knowledge. In short:

Sadly, these exams are more political rather than educational. They do benefit those that provide the software for the exams. What's really messed up about FCAT, though, is the schools get allocated funding based on how the students do. The school geta an "F", they lose funding. They get an "A", they get a better budget. And for those that provide software for the testing equipment, they benefit the most off of that.
meanwhile else where: Yeah sure. lets get rid of recess. dpon't worry, the kids don't mind. *I walk through the door with a shot gun and blow the guy's head off*
