American music, good or bad?

What do I think about american music...well I do have some songs that are american music such as Light Rock so I think it still good even if I do also enjoy Japanese Music also.

most of the stuff from the state's is RAP. i realy don't like RAP! you should put a c in front of it!

i prefer my own style and that's alway's gonna create controversy so don't bother asking.

It all depends on what you listen to. Sure most of the music from today Sucks Horribly, but there still is some good stuff out there, you just gotta know where to look. I mean bands like System of a down, voodo glow skulls, bouncing souls and a bunch of others. And if that dont work for ya, go to the oldschool stuff. Nirvanna, Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC, The Jimi Hendrix Experence,Steppin Wolf, sublime, Sweet child (greenday when they were punk), Dead Kennedys, BB King. The lists goes on and on man! It all depends on what you listen to, because rock still lives in the us! Now im not saying all of our music is good, hell alot of new rock strait up sucks.. but if you know where to look youll find some grate stuff.

Meh, most mainstream Japanese rock/pop (or, stupidly-named, J-pop/rock) emulates Western music, as it is. Some of you really need to broaden your horizons before making the ignorant claims I've been reading throughout this thread.

yeah, hell even Nobuo Uematsu (guy who does the music for the Final Fantasy games) Says that he was heavily influenced by american music. even the pillows say they sound like green day some times

The music we hear today isn't bad but to me I just listen to music that keeps it interesting. Linkin Park, Green Day those kind of bands I listen too.

*nods* Agreed. I for one enjoy some western music, but most of it would be considered oldies by people I meet everyday (classmates grrr)
My favorite types of music are Japanese, Jazz, Orchestra, classical, rock/pop (old by some peoples standards), and a few more styles.

American imitations of Asian music, eh? Start listing some Asian bands/artists and which American bands you feel are immitating them. Then, maybe I'll here you out. See-saw, as you mentioned that you like, is very Western-inspired.

Give you the music of the 80's? You mean the decade with more one-hit-wonders than every other decade combined? The decade with the short-lived atrocity that was hair bands? The decade with more new wave/electro-pop/synth bands than anyone, including me, a huge synthpop/electronica enthusiast, knew what to do with? Sure, there are definitely some 80's gems (Depeche Mode, The Police, The Cars, Joy Division, The Smiths, and New Order, while not all American, immediately come to mind); but good lord, I would never go back to the experimentation era. Music changes and sharpens with the times, and if you know where to look, you'll find some amazing music under the radar and beyond the declining American airwaves. In particular, Canada (North America) has been pumping out some amazing bands: Arcade Fire, Stars, Wolf Parade, to name a few.

The best way to discover lower-publicity bands, I've found, is start off with something like, for example, Arcade Fire. Search for them on CDnow or Amazon and check out the similar artists and/or "customers who bought this bought ______" recommendations. It's really the best way to discover a plethora of amazing bands with such definitive styles on your own.

For example, upon searching for Xiu Xiu on Amazon, one of my current favorite bands, there are recommendations for LCD Soundsystem, Wolf Parade, Bloc Party, and The Decemberists, four more low-key bands. It really just depends on what you're up to hearing. You may not enjoy these particular selections, but you may find something you like, eventually, and go from there.

If you want some really original music, I've stumbled apon this hidden gem from the 80's that I think is amazing. It's called "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. It's a crazy, "what the hell?" kind of medly between classic guitar and performance pieces. Once you get past the yodeling, asian flutes, and accordian, there's some of the craziest, rock hard guitar ever!

If your looking for originality in your music, this is it!

Those are good bands. I listen to the Gorillaz when they are on in the radio.

Feel Good Inc. is really good. The song does a good job of keeping it interesting when it's slow and fast.

if music was more like rock and roll ie has a drumkit in the band, instead of (c)rap ie has some person yabbering on about how many female dog's that they have,then i would like it.

infact anything heavy metal/goth(marilyn manson,slipknot,mettalica) are alright.

the bad thing is that instead of promoting these band's, they promote (name of place) idol. that is the worst thing ever to hit my ear's.
