.hack unnoficial mmorpg by iridium based.
So we finally got a .hack// mmorpg made by an indie game company called iridium based. They are basing the mmorpg on the world R:1. It literally just got funded today from the kickstarter. [ link removed per our forum rules and policies ] check it out guys.
Re: .hack unnoficial mmorpg by iridium based.
There are actual dreams of people on the line here, so I don't want to sound like I'm bashing this, I just have mixed feelings. I'm actually really impressed by the art on their page--they have a great artist.
But, that said, I don't see this succeeding. The World was never meant to be an actual MMO, and from the video they seem to be already incorporating some of the very impractical aspects of it (small, bottle-necked Root Towns, areas so numerous you never encounter actual human beings, etc.).
The concept of The World is protected by international copyright law, and even variations on it could be subject to a lawsuit, as this is all extremely derivative from the source material. Especially if they intend to charge for it--and how else would they run a server?
But they are clearly doing a variation, so it's not The World from .hack, but one with enough differences where they hope they won't get sued. So not only does it possess numerous problems that no non-fictional MMO should have, but even after those sacrifices it's just a "similar" game.
And the problem with that is that the budget is just $6,000. If you're going to play a "similar" game, play FF14 or White Knight Chronicles or something. They had budgets of millions of dollars and were designed by top-class game creators. These guys are going to need dozens of artists as good as the guy doing their concept art, which it isn't apparent they have. Name one incredible MMO with a $6,000 budget.
So basically they took the wrong things from it, but also not enough from it, and it's difficult for me to see the point of be at all hopeful about this. But I wish them luck.
