Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena

Post by Kaori »

The Shin Megami Tensei series has a weird history. It started as collection of first-person dungeon-roaming RPGs with heavy religious overtones. As Doom-style corridor exploration fell out of the graces of RPG fans, the series took on more traditional RPG roles. Nevertheless, the games had an almost Pokémon style of collectivity to them as your main method of getting stronger was befriending demons and merging them together to create new creatures. This all changed in the Persona series, which shifted the focus to the characters themselves and framed the demon acquisition system as a part of the characters' minds or souls. The Megaten games were relatively unknown through the generations of the NES, SNES, and PlayStation, and while the early days of the PlayStation 2 brought us hits such as Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga, the franchise really hit home when Persona 3 came to American shores. Fueled partially through a media controversy that highlighted the characters shooting themselves in the head to summon their Personae (many of which were named after demons), its bizarre combination of dating game-type social simulation, time management, demon raising collectivity, and random dungeon crawling made it a cult classic. In fact, it's this same style of gameplay that has become synonymous with the Persona and possibly even the Megaten names today.......
And now Arc System Works is making a fighting game out of it, it's also a Fusion of RPG and fighting with some attacks inflicting status ailments or even instant death.

After looking it up, the original Persona was made only 6 months after Pokemon Red and Green (Jap only) back in 96'. That isn't enough time for them to copy a concept and make it into a game of that scale. My guess would be 2 people had nearly the same idea due to a popular trend at the time.

Actually, the first game of the Shin Megami Tensei series dates from '92, while it's predecessor, Megami Tensei, dates from '87. Also, the Megami Tensei games were based off of the Digital Devil Story novels (Megami Tensei is the name of the 1st of three novels), which dates from the 80s too.

So yeah, if anyone was copying anyone, pokemon was the one doing the copying, but that's not the point of this topic.

Back on topic, I didn't really look much into that game, but now I'm kinda wondering how they'll handle the main character's persona on that fighting game. They'll use their starting persona, multiple personas, "ultimate" persona, or what? (btw, haven't seen the video cuz my net sucks xD)

Add in the MC from Persona 3 and I'm in. Toss in some villains to increase the roster size. Shirtless Akihiko and Catsuit Mitsuru are confirmed. Oh the fan service.

If they put P3 MC in there, I wonder what name they'll use, since P4 anime has proven the manga to not be a reliable source for the "real" name of the MC...

Persona 4 is Friggin awesome but I dare say I like 3 better, it was more challenging.

And I was pretty sure that this is not a seperate game, but a an addition to the Persona 4 port for the playstation Vita thats slated to release this summer if my memory serves correctly. (or at least so I thought i may have just fused together info about the two games lol) So in that case im not sure it would be accurate to call it a sequel.......I hope they dont do the same thing as persona 3 portable and not render the main character when outside of battle areas.

The game is for PS3, not for Vita, golden is for Vita, get your facts straight before saying anything.

Depemds on you, as far as I'm concerned I don't think the P3 MC might be appearing due to other characters taking up the slots like elizabeth and labrys.

Now that I think about it I heard somewhere that this game is a sequel to persona 4 which is awesome so it makes sense of the p3 main character isnt it since He's technically dead so if It is a deck ate sequel to 4 odds are he won't be in it
