Publishing Help

I have quite a few poems that I've created over the years, and many people have been telling me to get them published, but the unfortunte side to that is the fact that I don't really know the basic steps TO asert my poems into publishing. Could anybody give a brief assumption or summary depicting how to publish a literary work such as a poem?

First of all, there are many literary journals that you can find by just using google. However, my professor for Creative Non-fiction has a blog that explains it:

However, be sure to look at the guidelines that the journals put on the site. Not all of them are the same.

Yea sorry but I really don't know anything about poetry. I know more about full books, but then again that is only from reading I have done, since I haven't gotten my first piece published yet.
