Silent Hill : Shattered Memories

Post by Mistral's_Man »

I'm always looking for a great scare and Silent Hill surely knows how to do it...
Or...Knew. Fear kinda left after Silent Hill : 3.

Has anyone tried out Shattered Memories yet?
I've been excited about its release for awhile now, but I just dropped $50 on Crystal Bearers...
And I'm not really looking for anymore disappointment. (Hint hint.)

If you're a fan of Silent Hill then you're either going to love it or hate it for the new direction Climax took the series. Overall the general consensus is that it was a great game, and certainly one of the better Wii games in the console's catalog. Having played through the game myself I thought it was well worth the money. Unless you're a purist who thinks any deviation from the formula set by Silent Hill 1-3 automatically constitutes an abomination to the franchise, then chances are you're going to like it. I thought the story was well done, the gameplay was intuitive and for once I got to see a game that didn't use the Wii's waggle-stick like an afterthought. Also the mechanic touted by the developers that factors your behavior into how the game plays out surprised me a lot. At first I thought it looked gimmicky but after seeing it I was surprised to find just how drastically the entire experience can change. No matter what you do the general outline of the story stays the same, but settings, characters, dialogs, and endings can all change based on little things you do from giving certain answers on one of the psych questionnaires to examining at an object on the wall. If you understand that Shattered Memories is not a remake of the original Silent Hill, then you shouldn't be disappointed. I recommend it to any horror fan.

I've read a good bit about it, but I didn't know it was actually out yet. I think it will disappoint some players while others really like it. From the interviews I've read it's got an adaptive story that'll will change depending on how you play the game. The game watches how you play and supposedly adapts to make it scarier for you. So you and a friend could play the same game and have very different stories. Also I think it doesn't have the main character fight the monsters, so it's more investigation, puzzle solving, etc. which is what'll probably turn some people away from it.

Don't buy it if you enjoy the combat of the other games, there is no combat in shattered memories (at least as far as i know) but there are monsters. The game didn't really appeal to me but it does really use the wii's motion sensors to the advantage.

I've played through the first three Silent Hill games as well as Homecoming (I've yet to get around to Silent Hill 4 or Origins), and I didn't have any problem with this in this game at all. The lack of combat is an important element of the game in fact. It's different, yes, but to have included it would have taken away from the game to be honest.

LOL, who actually enjoyed the combat in the other games anyway? The shitty combat controls have always been one of the largest flaws of the series.

As one of the biggest Silent Hill buffs evar (I love it even more than I do .hack, if you can believe it), I proclaim that Shattered Memories may possibly be the greatest Silent Hill game of ALL TIME.

Okay, i know Im gonna sound like a dick here but,

I new to Silent Hill, I know EXTREMELY late. BUt after hearing about for 11+ years, i thought Id look into it atleast vaguely know what its about b/c tbh I thought it was just another FPS zombie shooter game lik Resident Evil.

I only read the plot of the 4 games and the origin of Silent Hill and right now Im just watching an entire playthrough of Silent Hill on Youtube, pretty much b/c after I read the plots of the 3 games, I had alot of WTF moments so i need a visual to help me understand.

Hah!
Heck no it's not a FPS.
Well it kind of is XD.
Silent Hill isn't that bad in shock factor. (At least I didn't think it was bad.)
Silent Hill 2 however, I was basically terrified the entire time.
Haven't played much of 3, though I should.
The Room just annoyed me.
Haven't picked up HomeComing. (Lack of a system.)
Shattered Memories I'm buying within the next few weeks.

Anyways...so messed up. *shivers*
I only fight when I'm cornered.

I personally haven't seen much about this game other than the title. I really need to take a more in-depth look at it. From what I've heard, it seems like it'll be awesome.. but then again, it'll depend on what I think of it when I see it.

Also, just to point out, but this thread is in the wrong section.

When I read that part, I just wanted to leave right there.
Silent Hill 2 however, I was basically terrified the entire time.
Yea, SH 2 is the one where I had the most WTF moments when I was reading it. I guess I gotta see it on youtube once Im done with SH1
Silent Hill isn't that bad in shock factor. (At least I didn't think it was bad.)
TBH, last night I was watching 12 playthroughs of SH1 ( there are 20 in all) and I wasn't to sleep. And I'm being completely serious right now.
The Room just annoyed me.
Yea i read that one too this morning, it was different than the other 3, not even scary. Seemed like a SAW movie.

Please tell me the movie four or five years ago was just a bad attempt at showing the series. The movie in general prevented me from ever seeing anything with Silent Hill in it. I had to leave in the middle of the movie in theaters because of how stupid and atroucious it was. The only good part was when the dude with the giant Pyramid on his head skinned the hell out of the woman. > >

One thing Im trying to figure out is does the city change from fog-covered city, to the "Otherworld"?

I mean, in SH 1 it starts out engulfed in that fog, then the first time Harry arrives int he Otherworld was when he climbed out of that clock tower. Then all the other times he "wakes up" in and out of the Otherworld. How the hell does that happen?

As a video gamer, you shouldn't need to be told that movies are no way to judge the game series it was based off of.

No, Homecoming was the SAW movie :P But I wasn't scared by any Silent Hill game, ever, except for Shattered Memories. Being able to kill stuff doesn't allow me to be afraid, and the clunky combat system didn't make me feel "oh noes scary run away" but more like "Ugh, how many times do I have to hit this stupid thing with this stupid weapon before I can move on?"

In the real world, the town of Silent Hill isn't foggy, and is infact populated as a popular tourist attraction. All the characters we see, without realizing it, are actually in another dimension. A dimension called the Otherworld that manifests the thoughts of the people unlucky enough to fall into it's borders, which shapeshifts and defies all logical sense.

And technically, the first time Harry Mason encountered the Dark side of the Otherworld was in the beginning when he got killed and woke up in the Cafe.

Yea, I got that part in the reading. What I'm asking is, how the hell do they get in the OtherWorld? Seems like Harry get fainting and either waking up in the fog-engulfed city or the dark, demonic city.

Wait, so both the fog-covered city and the dark, demonic city is the Otherworld?

Thats how i am wit Devil May Cry, but with this game. Literal chills went down my back when i was just reading it.

While I'm at it, I just realized, how did he enter the Otherworld after that crash? Besides I thought he only died in the Bad ending?

Wait, so both the fog-covered city and the dark, demonic city is the Otherworld?
Correct. At no point in the games do we see the characters in the real world (except the very beginning of Silent Hill 3, and in the endings of most of them, I guess).

Both the foggy and dark worlds are part of the same plane of existence, but this plane twists, and defies normal geograpy and physics, such as doors not connecting to where they should, and mazes where five lefts give you a right, and things like that. Moreover, everyone's experiences are unique and don't quite match up because they're experiencing their own realities. In the first game, everyone is in Alessa's foggy world, but she lets Harry into the Dark World she experiences; and in Silent Hill 2, everyone has their own world, and though they can meet each other, they're not occupying the same physical space or even seeing the same room.

The Bad Ending is non-canon, so we can disregard it as him dying and experiencing everything as a dream. What happened according to the canon game storyline, though, is that after crashing into Alessa's astral projection, the Masons, along with everyone else involved, were pulled into Alessa's world. Harry Mason got killed in the alleyway in the beginning of the game, but he was revived in the Cafe, probably by the Cheryl aspect of Alessa's personality.

Hmm, and Cheryl is aprt of Alessa?

What the hell I'll take a shot in the dark here, So the alternate dimension of SH, its default is the foggy world that everyone is in individually, but the Dark World is the manifestation of ppl's dark thoughts and nightmares? And when Harry crashed, he and Cheryl woke up in the "default dimension" of the alternate SH. And during the times of the game, Harry shifts into Alessa's Dark World which is blood-stained, a rusted, etc?

On a side-note, it seems like there is an equal chance for everyone to enter SH's alternate dimension. Everyone is in danger.

Hmm, and Cheryl is aprt of Alessa?
Yes. Cheryl is half of Alessa's soul, split off by Alessa to slow down the birth of the God she was impregnated with. Alessa's spirit leaves her body to merge with Cheryl so that she could put her plans into action.

There is no default. There's no real difference between the two worlds, as they're the same dimension.
On a side-note, it seems like there is an equal chance for everyone to enter SH's alternate dimension. Everyone is in danger.
During the Alessa incident, Alessa pulled in people she was emotionally connected to, though Cybil was warped in on accident due to being close enough to Harry and Cheryl during the warp. Afterwards, the town's Otherworld pulled in people with immensely strong emotional thoughts and baggage. The guilt of murder, the loneliness of an orphan, etcetera.
