Need some help with Clannad

I know this is a stupid question, but here I go.

After finishing the Clannad anime, I want to get the visual novel, but I'm not exactly sure how the whole process works. Do I buy it online, THEN download the English patch for it? Or do I just download the whole game off the internet? Do I have to change any settings on my computer? Also, am I might get Windows 7 soon, so will I be able to run it, or do I have to stay on XP?

Just a quick reminder, please do not link to any game downloads. I believe English patches are fine though...

Buy/download the game, then get the patch. I'm pretty sure there are patches for every single PC version of the game, so you don't need to worry about which one you're getting. (If you're buying the first version without voices then there's a voice-patch you can download.)

You might have to change your system language to Japanese, or open the game with Applocale, but considering the translation is 100% finished now I don't think so. (I played the game using an unfinished patch then got the final patch later on.)

I haven't heard anything about it, but there's no reason why it shouldn't work perfectly fine on Windows 7.

Even with a complete patch, you need to change your language settings to Japanese so the game's script can be properly read. Otherwise the English patch will try to translate...Squares.
