Wouldn't consider myself a hardcore fan, but I've played Shadow Dragon, and plowed through it in about a day and a half. I loved it, and I'll most likely get another game of the series if I see one.

Shadow Dragon is pretty "meh" compared to some of the other games in the series IMO, but it's still fun as hell. My favorite would be either Path of Radiance or Thracia 776 (which never came out outside of Japan, unfortunately).
