Light Yagami was an idiot. I don't care how smart he was he had no common sense. "Yeah, lets stop people from killing each other by killing them."
L is by far the better of the two.

Light was by no means an idiot. Even if his idea was faulty, you can't fault his intellect for not working around a philosophical dilemma. Regardless of the ethical and moral concerns about Light's plans as Kira, you can't argue with the results. While he was killing people, crime did go down and war completely stopped. It resurged when he was stopped, but still.
