The concept of Liminality
Any one else ever read into what Liminality is. As stated in OVA 3 Liminality is the true nature of boundaries. Anyways I looked into some sites on line and there is ALOT of stuff on it. And it can be aplied to so many things.
For example when we reach puberty we are in a state of liminality, we are no longer children however nor are we adults. We are in the middle of the boundrie. It's really very interesting

In .hack, they refer to the concept of liminality as the barrier between the real world and the virtual world. Liminality, in concept, is everywhere around us at all times. Even something like the wall between two rooms, or stages of life.
In response to the main post though: It is not possible to be in the middle of the boundarie, when you move to a new stage of life you are simply passing through the barrier and into the next, you are never halfway between one or the other.

Be careful of information that you "just read," its not always true. And just to be safe, I want you to know that I'm not attacking you for posting that. I just always warn people not to believe everything they read.Hey I was just wrighting what I read
I agree with Lady Subaru, there are too many definitions of liminality. So, its best just to leave it to the creators of the show to ponder that one. There are lots of definitions of Liminality. Better stick with what the OVA meant.

I feel that there's a good reason for using the term liminality. I'm gonna use a spoiler since some may not have seen any of them.
In the second OVA, "In the case of Yuki Aihara", What basically occurs is the second coming of Pluto's Kiss. We all know that. but, All of the tie-in's with the crisis to The World lead me to believe that the real world is merging with the game.
hmmm... many nice plot opportunities!!!

some one told me that blackrose is in that anime, but IRL, no OL, and is that true? i only saw the first ep
--------^ Kinda off topic
but i think the concept of the anime is like some parts of the anime(sign) and the games, they're trying to find out why people are going into commas

Well I haven't heard that rumor before, but then again I have yet to see the 4th episode. I don't believe that to be true though, unless she just makes a small cameo appearance or something like that.
Anyways, from what I know so far I believe that to be false.

I believe what it's saying is...
Something to the effect of..
Example: Tsukasa or Sieg.
Were there minds INSIDE of the game? Or outside?
Since SIEG was the PC,and Kasumi was the PLAYER, which "body" was the "mind" in.
It's sort of hard to put it in literal terms.
Ibelieve, it's when the "boundry" becomes unclear.
Like in Tsukasa's case.
The PC was outside, but his MIND was inside.
But was his MIND really inside the game? Or was the PC inside of it, and the MIND outside?

There's a great deal that can be studied in .hack, and the concept of Liminality is highly interesting.
My mother wrote her degree dissertation on liminality, so she knows quite a lot about it, and she's interested in what I've told her about .hack.
As .hack//sign progresses, for example, there are more and more references to the real world, as the series grows closer to its culmination. People's lives and existences irl begin to reflect more and more on their actions within the game. For example, Subaru's disability irl being the reason for her spending so much time online, and Bear's relationship with his son in and out of the game.

Exactly. Although the focus of Liminality is in .hack//Liminality, when they were exploring the comatose players. Yes, Liminality can be labelled onto everything in .hack, but the reason the term is introduced is to explore the philosophical state the players have reached.
Also, didn't some of Harald's notes mention something about Liminality and it's connection to Aura? Something about breaking the barrier between Reality and the Internet.
I think this is symbolic for Aura, a digital human.
