Right. Kyon timetravels to the past and meets Haruhi when she's vandalizing her middle school in order to try and summon aliens. It was the earliest point in traceable history. The night where Haruhi created the universe and developed her interest in the paranormal, and Kyon, under a different alias, helped her, creating a Time Loop where Haruhi would provide the means for Kyon to go back in time, and Kyon's going back in time is what causes Haruhi to give Kyon the means to go back in time and give himself the means to...ugh.
Also, his actions have TREMENDOUS consequences in the fourth book.

Well, not THE most important. Atleast he didn't reveal why Haruhi was missing in the fourth novel, how Haruhi got her powers, or the true identities of some of Kyon's seemingly mundane classmates.
