Anime recommendations?

Post by Ganheim »

I personally have watched:
  • .Hack//Liminality - Had good music, but the story seemed pretty slow and didn't quite seem to get anywhere most of the time
  • .Hack//Roots - I didn't like the music done here nearly as much as SIGN, but it was nice to see a lot of things explained after I started playing G.U. Of course, I then got annoyed at the number of players I didn't see
  • .Hack//SIGN - I love the music, though I wonder where's the action if everybody's in an online game? Still a good series, and despite complaints about it not having enough action from the person who showed me his copy of the series, I thought the story and focus on them asking 'why' was a nice change of pace from the "let's kill everything between me and a possible answer" that Roots takes with Haseo (though I'll confess that I still liked both, SIGN the best of the three).
  • Blue Gender - the main character annoyed me all the way through the series until he disappeared, and then he became tolerable. Music wasn't much to note, and watching them shoot giant bug blowholes got old pretty fast.
  • Elfen Lied - good music, good if melancholy story, extremely bloody. I put this on whenever I get off shift and I'm in a really bad mood. I just project 'certain peoples' faces' into the bloodbath and things get better. I was surprised at how deeply they got into the characters, and despite the short time I felt attached to a lot of them.
  • Full Metal Panic (Original, Fumoffu, The Second Raid) - the music was generally good, story worked and the comedy was funny as hell. I am still in shock at how well TSR drew me in.
  • Ghost in the Shell - Nice music, good action, and most of all I love the Tachicomas and the philosophy they pack into it.
  • His and Her Circumstances - funny, and frighteningly true to life
  • Inuyasha - I love the music, and despite what many people say I think the story and characters are good. It's also great practice listening to in the original language for people like me trying to develop their meager Japanese comprehension, because the language in this series is relatively simple
  • Love Hina - annoying music with repetitive humor, interrupted on occasion by some slapstick comedy. Okay, it may have had the funniest punch and kick from any anime and I liked how Keitaro didn't take a repetitive position whenever he was sent flying (unlike Ranma 1/2), but those don't save what I otherwise found to be a disappointing manga/anime
  • Nadesico - funny over and over again, with another of my favorite lines of all time: "This is the lover's spat that will determine the fate of the human race?"
  • Orphen - I liked the show, if hated the music. Also contains one of my favorite anime lines ever: "Talk to the hand!"
  • Ranma 1/2 - endlessly funny. Despite the fact that a lot of the stunts were pulled multiple times with some variation, it never got old. And it's so fun to watch Shampoo plot (or just watch her period. She makes a scene wherever she goes, in one way or another). I just wish Kodachi would die, I hate her in the Japanese and English dubs
  • Record of Lodoss War - some of the music was good, but otherwise I didn't like it
  • Ruroni Kenshin - nice music, but Good Lord the anime dragged on! Still, the outtakes in the special features were a nice addition
  • Vandread - great music, special effects, story, humor, there is nothing bad that can be said about this series
Since there aren't any other threads like this in the Anime section, I wonder what is your experience with anime? And am I the only one who pays much attention to the music? Any ones I've missed that you think I should try (perhaps for good music or dramatic storyline), and why?

ahhhh. its another person that just remembers elfen lied for the gore/nudity :/
the incredable story of it overshadows that by FAR

i think i'll just say something about my 3 favorite animes. fullmetal alchemist, gundam seed (never though a gundam could be anything like this O_o) and eureka seven.
why i love them? they all have this in common:
one huge adventure with many, many awesome people along the way
starting off from nothing and going through a hell of a lot of experiences
can be very serious, emotional and dramatical - the biggest and best point imo
and then just the rest, like really awesome music, the awesome story, plot, character etc etc

in the end, i dont really care what genre it is. it could be anything. its the core story that i find amazing.

if anyone know exactly what i mean and can recommend another anime that fits this perfectly, let me know :D

The story drew me in, too, (otherwise I would've bought the soundtrack and forgotten the original anime, like I did with .Hack//Liminality, if it doesn't have a good story I'll end up dismissing it), but sometimes when you've had a bad day some gratuitous violence does wonders for settling frayed nerves, and that's why mine is on the top of the bookshelf. If I was going to list these by actual favorite, Vandread would most definitely be at the top. I love the gripping story and interpersonal relations that rise and fall over the course of the two seasons. They don't pull any (overly) nasty storytelling surprises but there are a healthy serving of twists and I'd definitely have to recommend that one if you haven't seen it yet.

I have the music for Gundam Seed Destiny, and I have to say it's darn good. The extended mix of "Asue no Hashi" (Bridge to the Future) is one of my favorite music tracks of all time. Never seen the actual anime, because Gundam animes often have a hopelessly obscure storyline and if you miss one episode you might as well stop watching entirely. I say that rather tongue in cheek, because I love the series 24 (with Kiefer Sutherland), and you cannot miss an episode there. I saw a couple of the first episodes for Fullmetal Alchemist and I did like it, there was a chilling horror to the depth of what those two kids got themselves into. Eureka Seven I've never heard of, so I'll have to try and look that one up.

EDIT: Asue no Hashi is Track 30 on the "Gundam Seed Destiny Vol 1" CD, previously I mistakenly said it was for "MS Gundam Seed".

miss an ep? watching anime on tv is terrible
can easily miss eps and ruin like you said. slow as hell to watch and you cant choose when. can easily suddenly stop airing and its probably english :x lol

gundam seed has a hell of lot. throwing some friends in with what happens and seeing what they go through. the emotion, drama and seriousness is just amazing.
i really need to see another anime like that >_<
and most of its biggest songs (ops, eds, insert) are some of my most favorite

i also think the eureka seven ost is amazing too (and as does the anime reactor community, which awarded it best sound track of whatever year it was)

btw, i cant find that song you mentioned O_o

Claymore: Pretty good action and I love the art.

Tsukuyomi ~Moon Phase~: come on its the cutest little blood sucker you will ever see :D (according to Funimation) Pretty good comedy and I liked the music.

Get Backers: I couldn't find a character that I hated out of the main cast. P.S. Kazuki rules

Death Note: Though I have a good feeling I'm going to hate the English version for Light's voice they chose for him right now -_-'

Yea, I own it. It's pretty friggen awesome. The main guy can get annoying because of his abandonment issues (leading to him not wanting to allow himself love), but other then that I loved it. Great action, pretty mind-bending at points, and the comedy is pretty good too :D At some points you feel like you're watching a baby-Evangelion-series (the same company made both) but the characters were different enough to make it fun.

I'll have to check that one out. By the way, has anybody seen "Angelic Layer"? A friend sent me a music video, and it looks like it has pretty good fight scenes, but from a well-cut 2-minute music video it's pretty hard to judge an anime.

And what's the opinions on "Fullmetal Alchemist"? I saw a few episodes of that, but don't remember any of it.

Naruto and Bleach are pretty good if you can survive filler episodes. I like they're story and music. (You really have to put up with fillers with Naruto though x_X)
Ganheim- Fullmetal was pretty good, I didnt quite care for the last episode but the movie helped that along a little better.
Yeah I liked Gundum Seed, but my favorite Gundum was G Gundum Mobile Fighter, really enjoyed that one ^_^.

And what's the opinions on "Fullmetal Alchemist"? I saw a few episodes of that, but don't remember any of it.
fullmetal alchemist:
large plot (don't miss an episode or you will get confused)
great characters
lots of action
lots of comedy
lots of themes
tons of plot twists, especially at the end. like the black gate.
recomend to wach at least once.

personal recommendations: (most people won't like these but i did.)

fruit basket 26ep.
azumanga daioh 26ep.
D.N. angel 26ep.
he is my master (warning: a little ecchie) 12ep.
evangelion (recomend waching end of evangelion for the true ending) (warning: highly depressing) 26ep.
