I haven't played it. It got good reviews. Of course you have to pay; it's a MMO...

From what I've seen, it looks like a LoTR version of World of Warcraft with a hint of Guild Wars.

I played in Closed and Open Betas and bought the retail version on Tues.

The graphics are phenominal, but very demanding of your computer. I have a 1.5 yr old laptop with a 2GHz processor, a 128mb videocard, and 1 gb of ram, and can only play on medium settings to reduce lag (sometimes I put it on lowest when in town).
My friend has a top of the line PC and plays on Ultra High graphics. He said that it's so detailed you can see a reflection of his character's current environment on the shiny belt buckle! :O (aka a sunset, you see it in the belt buckle as you would in real life).

The gameplay is a lot of fun. I've only gotten to lvl 15, but I've enjoyed it all the way. It's easy to solo, but grouping is a lot of fun too, especially with the group skills (you can work with others to do a ton of damage that wouldn't be available solo).

There is actually storyline too! It involves the characters we all know and love from the books/movies (for example, you can do quests given by Aragorn in the Prancing Pony Inn that pertain to the main storyline of the books/movies). Although I thought it might sound a bit cheesy/lame to some, it works nicely and is a lot of fun.

Like the evil characters? You can play as one! Instead of having to create a whole other character like WoW (horde), you play as lvl 50 monsters. Instead of gaining xp, you gain destiny points. These points can then be spent to either gain new abilities/looks/etc for your monster character or can be spent on buffs for your main "good" character. Let's just say it was fun to have to collect Hobbit Feet for a quest lol. The monster play involves a lot of PVP with the "good" characters as well.

It's a very promising MMO that I look forward to spending many hours in. Too bad you missed the free beta >.>

Like World of Warcraft... only with Gollum.

I'd play it, just to hear 50,000 people say "LOL! I have the One Ring!" because we all know it would be a special event item. :(

Actually, not so much. They worked in a linear/main quest line that you can follow(along with doing all the other quests) that is parallel to the journey of the fellowship. Like while Book 1 Chapter 1 is taking place, you go off and do something not directly related, while Chapter 2 is taking place you get another job, etc. So far it's just been working for Aragorn while he was in Bree.
Anyways, very fun game. It's built pretty solid too. All the classes are pretty fun, even guardian and minstral(tank and healer). Very nice graphically too(Rivendell looks sweet!). Open beta just ended, but I think they still do the whole "play 10 days for free!" thing.

yeah, i'd agree there have been a lot of games, but nothing done with this touch. Since you aren't playing as Aragorn, Legolas, etc., the gameplay is all new, as well as new storyline (stuff that happens that effects the main story that you haven't experienced before)

How're they going to go about that, then? Will players be allowed to change the fate of Middle Earth? Or will it just never end? What about the Elves. I understand it that they all leave. I have a friend who's betaing it right now. I really do think it will be good, but that only gets it along so much.

I will buy it, but it's up to the creators to keep me paying a monthly fee.

The main story is going on while you do stuff, so all the stuff that happens in the books is also happening, you just don't see most of it first hand. Eventually with content patches and expansion packs the story will get all the way up to the very end of the last book, so hopefully players will get to take part in some of the massive battles that happen in the books. Anyways, story doesn't change, you just see a lot of the parts that don't involve the Fellowship.
