You can safely assume that almost all gender-specific pronouns in that book were added in translation. In that particular case, the Japanese uses the term kono hito - 'this person'. Even if it had been in the original, how would a total stranger know his/her gender?

There is one line, which didn't make it into the English translation fully intact, which may be a weak confirmation of Hotaru being male, may be a reference to voice-changing software, or may just be misleading. Other than that, there's absolutely nothing there to indicate either way. I've checked.

Vol.2's Dotto Haku says that Hotaru's PC is male, since it's the same type as Elk's and Tsukasa's. Hotaru's irl gender is kinda left open, though going by the PC...

Just because the PC design is the same doesn't mean the PC is male. The artist did comment that it was the counterpart of Elk's and whatnot.

Furthermore, Magi's PC is a male and she's a chick IRL, so it doesn't make a difference either way. My vote's on female due to Hotaru's name, personality, voice, cute little curly hair and earrings, and inclusion in Shugo's harem.

yea, but Endrance was mainly comedy relief with his "lol gay secks." And frankly, I'm pretty sure all the other characters call Hotaru a "she." Any evidence pointing to Hotaru's gender as a male is super ambiguous and hardly worth arguing.

No, they say Hotaru has the same PC type as Tsukasa and Elk. Just looking at the games, it's clear that PC types are divided by gender... Hotaru's name was explained, and it probably isn't Hotaru's real name, so I don't think it really indicates anything...
