Does anyone have a game they'd recommend to me?

Post by Kururu »

I love video games. However, much to my own dismay, recently I've been having trouble finding a game that truly tickles my fancy. I bought The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and I could never get really into it. I wondered if I was starting to outgrow video games or something crazy like that.

Then I bought .hack//G.U., and started playing IMOQ again, and figured I must have been wrong. Now, though, I'm done with both G.U. and IMOQ, and am at a loss for what game to delve into now.

Games I've really liked and would play over again include:
G.U.
IMOQ
Pokémon (Blue, Crystal, Sapphire, FireRed)
Fable
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
Paper Mario (for N64)

Anybody have any suggestions of games that are different, yet would match my tastes (not including shooters, if at all possible)? Or, games that you would suggest to ANYBODY, because they were just that awesome?

List of games I've played that aren't listed above:
FFVII
Pokémon stadiums
Yoshi's Story
Pikmin
Luigi's Mansion

Also: I apologize profusely if this post is in any way improper. I didn't see any specific rules for writing in this section of the forum, and I did a search and didn't see anything about recommending games, so... sorry if I did something wrong. ^_^;;;;

paper mario for the gc is a really, really good game.
tales of symphonia and tales of the abyss are also fantastic rpg's, really good.
i really, really recommend those
(i also recommend playing zelda a bit until you start geting places, unless you've already completed the first set of temples?)
oh and super paper mario looks really good too
and if its anything like paper mario and the thousand year door (the gamecube one), which it is, but slightly more platformer style, then it should be, and apparently really is really awesome too

I hope you're being sarcastic because the almost, if not all of the games you've mentioned liking are RPGs...

Thousand-Year Door, right? I watched my friend play it, and it looked kinda weird to me. Do you have a basic plot synopsis?

i really, really recommend those
A synopsis of this too, please? ^^;;?

I'm about 40 hours in, I can  change between wolf and human at will, and am in the... Arbiter's Temple or something? The one in the middle of the desert.

What do you mean by platformer style?

Sort-of, I guess. I didn't totally realize at first how uniform it really is. I guess what I was trying to say is, Pokémon is a decent deal different than something like Fable? Or, that's how it seems to me, anyway. ^^;;;

^ a huge, random list like that isn't really going to help someone pick a few games to play :/

well, you just have to go out to find these 7 (i think) starts from different locations all over the kingodm and beat the final boss really. but the story isn't that bad lol. infact, going on all those different adventures, was really good fun. but its really funny and a really good game, hmm, its not like an rpg you'd play for the story alone. but the whole experience of this game is just awesome. for instance, one location you go to, is some town, that hosts this fighting arena, which you have to get through to the tpp, and also find out about some weird things about the whole building as you do, or like spending three days on a train, trying to solve a mystery, on the way to a new location.
its just a really fun, awesome adventure ^^.
tales of symphonia and tales of the abyss are also fantastic rpg's, really good.
i really, really recommend those

hmm, well i'll say about tales of symphonia first. its one very big, amazing story, like the general rpg. well, it seems like the general rpg, and i thought i was nearish the end at one point, early one. but then huge twists happen, and it turns out i was only about 10% into the game and story, and i knew nothing yet. the story is just incredable and the gameplay, especially the battle engine is really good too.

tales of the abyss, is from the same series and the next major one after symphonia. i've not managed to get far yet, but from its ratings and what i have played so far, it seems like it'l be another incredable adventure with a seriously awesome story.
(i also recommend playing zelda a bit until you start geting places, unless you've already completed the first set of temples?)
I'm about 40 hours in, I can  change between wolf and human at will, and am in the... Arbiter's Temple or something? The one in the middle of the desert.
ah cool. as long as you didnt give up straight away ^^
oh and super paper mario looks really good too
and if its anything like paper mario and the thousand year door (the gamecube one), which it is, but slightly more platformer style, then it should be, and apparently really is really awesome too
What do you mean by platformer style?
well, with paper mario, its rpg like. you touch an enemy, go into battle and its a turn based battle (still with the need to time attacks, so its not all boring). but this one seems just like the original mario brothers, where you can just jump on enemies, no rpg style battle scenes, but with all the items, skills, different characters etc and setting and lay out like the other paper marios

i really want to play all these again, after thinking about them all :D

from what i've read, you're a big advocate for good storylines, correct?
if so, then obviously RPGs will be to your best. on that matter, i 'll suggest a few RPGs i know with good storylines, before getting into anything else.
there are the tales of games. like FF, each installment has a different overall plot, but similar aspects from previous games (battle system and what not). the two you will want to look into are: tales of symphonia (GC) and tales of the abyss (PS2). good plot in each, although a little complicating to summarize entirely.

also look into star ocean: till the end of time. rather lengthly RPG on the PS2. very fun hack slash battle style, and the story works very interestingly. as you travel from world to world, you deal with the story from that world, while dealing with an over arching storyline. think like kingdom hearts, only less worlds with more indepth stories. at least a 50 hour story.

also try the Xenosaga series.

as far as other genres of games go, theres the Devil May Cry series, Shadow of the Collossus, Resident Evil (what ever ones you can get your hand on, best are the first, 4 and code veronica)
as far as shooter games go, try the metroid prime games. large maps meat great puzzles, all in first person.

if you can get your hands onolder games, try the megaman legends series as well. thrid person shooter style,. done very well with a 2 part plot, good enough to make you actually want to play both games.

those are just a few games though. i'll comeback after thinking of more.

more old school RPGs you may want too look into:

the chrono series: consisting of chrono trigger (SNES/PS1) and chrono cross(PS1, played in order of apperance). you definatly will not be disapointed. trigger boasts one of the most fun battle systems in any RPG, and a great story to boot. now cross has one hell of an odd battle system, turns most people off at the start. but once you get into the meat of the game, you'll be hooked. also the game with my absolute favorite story line, second place going to the MGS games (also games that are MUST plays). you'll definatly enjoy this series if you are a square enix fan.

legend of dragoon(PS1): probably the WORST graphics i have ver seen, but trust me, with how good the gameplay and storyline are, you wont even care! its pretty cool in battles, considering each character at one point in time or another inthe game gains the power to change from human for into dragoon form, to really tear **** up. somewhat cookie cutter plot in many ways, but takes alot of that in a different direction than what you would expect. also boasts the longest final boss fight in all of eternity. looooooooong fight.

quest 64: i really shouldnt have to say anything about this game, you should just read the title and know its supreme awesomeness. honestly, best RPG on the N64. makes up for its lack of a plot.

going back the newer games, try games like Skies of arcadia (GC)(also my favorite RPG of all time), baten kaitos(also GC) and the suikoden series. on suikoden dont get your hopes up on playing the first two... unless you're willing to fork over close to $200 per game. very rare and amazing games. however, the last three are still formidible. III clearly being the one you should first look into, provides you with three angles on the same story, each from the perspective of a different character. one you get pulled into this one, i'll be suprised if you can manage to stop playing. ever.

i figure you'll have alot of gaming coming your way if you get you hands on even some of these games. if you have the chance to get the older ones, i say go for it. very good investments.

hurray for being scatter minded! once again, i remembered some more games for you to check out!
if you like fable, then something along the lines of that, in terms of gameplay is the champions of norath series. probably more comparible to diablo, but hey you can use your imagination :3.
on that note, if you havent played diablo or diablo2 before, do it now! the battle chest box set is like 25 dollars, and it comes with both games and the expansion!

more close to fable, you cuold try the heros of might and magic series. awesome hack/slash style games.
also look into untold legends, and baldurs gate (lol, i spelt that wrong).

till next time! (it'll probably be soon if i remember more awesome games of awesomeness)

The Warriors series.
Basic hack and slash where one lone Officer can destroy over 1000 troops if need be.
Storyline? History, well except those scenarios where they live longer then they're suppose to.

ah yeah, skies of arcadia legends was an awesome game too.
i've also got baten kaitos, but not quite completed it yet and haven't played it in like, a year :(
although i do think tales of symphonia was better, but skies of arcadia legends comes second and is still extremely awesome and so is baten kaitos, but i havent completed that yet though, like i said
