the point of memory fragments

does anyone know the point of the memory fragments from mutation? or what the key items you receive are used for.

You will need them later for a side quest to find the hidden .hack sign characters(you only NEED them if you want to do it it has nothing to do with the story)

You get the .hack//SIGN characters weapons with them.
