The best explanation I've heard/read yet.

Sure, the art in video games is art; no crap, Sherlock. Same with music. That doesn't count. But the video games themselves and in general... yeah, I think so. Only the games with true intentions anyway. Games made purely for profit, no I don't consider art. But if people put lots of work, research, and pour their soul and mind into the creation of a game, then yes. I'd take that as art. The .hack// series, for example, in all is an art. All of the connections and the storyline, all of it. Something like Disney's Whatever isn't. HALO, DDR, sure, though the latter to a lesser extent.

varies.

The games that appear to have some EFFORT to them are definitely art

but the rehashes are anything but

one of my favorite examples is Otogi. the way you move, fight, everything about it screams art

Art is only in a game to serve a purpose of seeing characters. There's just too much types of art to say a videogame is art.

If the game has some great art you have to see, like Okami, then I suppose it is. However...there's also gameplay and characters...I wouldnt' be looking for the art.

ME? I say no. But it's a good thing. Art is expression. Video games are expression. But you know what? GOOD video games have all sorts of art in it. Drawing, a story, hell, Music. It has all of that in this one thing, and to top it off, you can even interact with it. Can you freely move about in a movie? A Piccasso? A Book? NO! Video games are something that transends "Art" and is some thing more. Why do most movies based on video games suck? And vice versa? We shouldn't cram Video Games into the Art subject like a two year old driving an apple in a hole meant for cubes. Video Games... is like creating the Heavens and worlds. It's almost like being a god.

Oh, and if Ebert ticked you off, tell him that he can eat his pride.

It depends.

Games can be considered art. All videogames have a story to tell. Paintings can tell stories, just like videogames can. The only difference is, in order to understand and progress through the story you have to "paint" it, or work through it in order to view it all. A painting is already completed and ready for your interpritation.

Some people would consider videogames nothing but leisure delight and joy. A.K.A. a waste of time it all really depends on the person who's saying this.
