Data Drain
this is the first time I have ever made a post on this forum and I have a question:
How does Data Drain affect people within The World?
Why does it put other players into comas and how does it happen?
I appreciate your help! Thank you!

Well... Judging from the first Liminality (all I've seen, I'm sorry to admit)...
There's a certain sound that plays while being DD'd, and it, along with (Judging from UdeDen) a subliminal message saying something like "You're dead", causing you to think that. Another thing is maybe certain light combinations causing deadly seizures? Remember in Infection there's a post about the head sets causing things like this. But that's just the theories of a person who doesn't know much.

Well, that's not exactly it. There's a bit more. When a person is getting into the game, there's a principle called Suspension of Disbelief that comes into play, where they get into their adventure and into their own little world, like when you're reading a good book or roleplaying or something, whatever.
Because of this, a person is more susceptible, and in states of fear or stress, the brain will conjure up false stimuli (like when you conjure false images when you're afraid and wandering in the dark by yourself) An example would be Mimiru claiming that Bear's hand is sweaty, and she postulates what will happen if they die in that level.
But really, nothing special is happening. Bear is correct in that it is all in Mimiru's mind. However, what if Mimiru was Data-Drained? Data Drain merely edits data. It has no effects on the mind. But it adds to an effect that Morganna, or whoever is doing the Drain, wants to acheive. An impossible monster kills you with an impossible attack, and you're already in a state where you can't tell the two worlds apart. you're gonna think you're really dead.
And just like you can get sick with enough willpower, a person subconsciously sends themselves into a coma, believing they are genuinely dead. As Yata claims, it is not so much that the souls of the players are being pulled into the game, but that the player merely subconsciously views The World as reality, making that true for that specific player. There is no line between Reality and Fantasy in .hack. Both of them are illusions.
