Roleplay? Please read!

Post by murane »

Hello, all. I've just made my account, like 3 seconds ago. And I'm sure most of you are curious as to who I am, and why I'm here, or something along those lines.

Anyways, I'm looking for a group of dedicated people to roleplay with me. I'm rather lonely on the PSU JP server, and I only got the game to roleplay in the first place. I'm not very picky, but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm looking for in other players to be around, here's a list.;

-Basic grasp of the english language
-A level of dedication, as I don't want people joining only to leave a week or so later (I want people who I can build characters with, have progression, and maybe even document our journeys in writing and stories)
-You have to have a little bit of an interest in PSU (This will allow you to a bit of research on the canon without getting bored. For those of you who don't know what PSU is, think .Hack// but in a more futuristic Neo Tokyo-esque setting. Space travel, etc.)
-You must like roleplay, as most of our character interaction will be in character
-You have to be able to tolerate playing a game that's completely in Japanese, haha. The US servers were shut down, because they weren't making enough money, that was back when it was a Pay to Play game and had subscriptions. So the only servers left are running the japanese version of the game.

So, just like contact me or something. We can talk! I can show you how to download the game and set up an ID and all that, and, I think it's reminiscent of .Hack//.

The game is Free to Play, no subscriptions or anything.

Here's the wiki for those curious; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasy_Star_Universe

no offense but I think you'll be getting anywhere with this, this is a roleplay section not a gamer compendium.

Because forum RP is filled with godmodders and mary sues. In addition, it gets bland quickly. (I know this from personal experience.)

I won't disagree, there are often unsavory character types in forum rps, however several of us on here are good forum role players, although our role plays don't usually reach a proper conclusion they do go for weeks plus. Though I don't have PSU, I ask that you give us a chance and if you won't join in on one then at least read a few before you condemn us.

Firstly, I have read a few. Secondly, I wasn't condemning 'you' specifically. I just know how these things work. Thridly, PSUJP is free, and I could show you how to install it and create an ID if you're interested. Fourthly, I wasn't questioning your skills as a roleplayer.

I'm glad you read a few. Am I correct in assuming that you enjoyed them at least a little and that's why you chose to ask us to join you on PSU? I'm curious, of the ones you read, which did you enjoy the most?

You say you weren't condemning us specifically. Yet those were the specific reasons you cited in response to Kaori's question, "why don't you hang here?"

I played PSU some on my friend's wii. It wasn't bad, and it did feel a touch reminiscent of .hack, but it didn't really grab me. Perhaps role playing on it would be more fun, but I am uncertain if it would entertain me enough that I would come back for a lengthy period of time, especially since I have Star Wars The Old Republic and am enjoying playing that a considerable amount.

Please reread. I stated that forum rp is filled with Mary Sues and godmodders. Besides, none of the forum RPs here have caught my interest. Most are bland cliches, or lack eloquence, or this or that. Visual representation allows RPers to feel more IN-CHARACTER. That's why I proposed the PSU. And you should get it by the way. Aside from the language barrier, it's lots of fun. And FREE. It's really rare to find such a high-caliber MMO being F2P.

To be honest, I only proposed it here because the PSUJP environment would suit a lot of .Hack// fans, as it has the same sort of... Atmosphere. And because I'm lonely in-game.

Well then, I propose a compromise. Murane, while you may not have condemned anyone specifically, by your comment,
murane wrote:Because forum RP is filled with godmodders and mary sues. In addition, it gets bland quickly. (I know this from personal experience.)
You have indirectly insulted the masses that enjoy RP'ing here, including "Old Boys" like myself that have been here for some years. Therefore, I purpose this: You give us a chance here and we'll put our money where our mouth is, so to speak. Create your RP, make your background, set the rules. Then lets see how things go, because it's like that the RP'ing here, would reflect the RP'ing there. Changing the place won't change the person behind the mask, after all.

Oh man, circlejerking abound. And for clarification, I insulted no one. But if you're so thin-skinned, you probably shouldn't be on the internet. And for those of you insisting that I should be HERE instead of places where I WANT to be, here's my list.;

1) Mary Sues and Godmodders
2) Everything ends up being a cliche, as themes and topics get reused and reused, and reused. People tend to cling to what they know, and what they think is 'cool'.
3) No skill requirement, I've seen more than a fair share of 'u' and 'ur', as well as improper grammar. Lack of and overabuse of capitalization, omitted punctuation, etc. And when your only link to the RP world is text, flawed portrayal ruins the immersion.
4) Responsibility. Not only is one member required to act the role of the 'Dungeon Master' they're also expected to draft out an entire essay for the introduction, to introduce the story, list out rules, AND play their own character. As well as point out obvious flaws, godmodders, and mary sues, while almost all the people whom the DM points out flaws with get defensive and essentially make for a horrid time.
5) Posting limitation. If one person posts multiple times, it's ineffective, but if you can't get anyone else to post, then that's really all you've got. However, let's say you do manage to get people, and they post sporadically you're left with the same situation. You can't force other people to post.
6) The systems of roleplay are waaaay different. In-game, there's what I tend to refer to has 'one-line' roleplay, versus the 'essay' type that people on forums SHOULD use. In that each character type out a string of one liners due to gaming limitation on text. Which allows ample time for thought, as well as allowing for an almost 'IM' roleplay feel. The roleplay happens real time, you're not sitting around waiting for posts.
7) I don't enjoy forum roleplay. I've done it for many, many, many years. All the topics are the same, character archetypes tend to all fill niche rolls, people abuse the system because no DM can think of every loophole, nor can every DM be flawless and detailed when writing up character rules. It's no longer fun.
8) If I wanted to forum roleplay, I'd do it on a site specifically built for roleplay. Either roleplay in general, or a specific roleplay site. (As well as the fact that this site seems horridly dead.)

Honestly, MUD roleplay through telnet is more exciting than forum RP. I can come up with more reasons if you'd like. You all can try to bash me for stating the way I feel and the way I see things, but that doesn't change any of it. You all know as well as I do that the forum rp system is flawed, and there's no real way to fix it. And I'd like to re-iterate; If I wanted to insult, I'd be thorough and tedious about it. I would quote paragraphs, and do searches, and point out every glaring flaw in anything that you've done. I attack people directly. My insults are not vague blanket statements applying to things IN GENERAL, of which none of you can seem to comprehend. If what I said insulted you, you must be one of the types of people listed. As all of you know as well as I do the types of people you can get in FRP.

Now, I hope that is a suitable response that addresses all your issues and complaints.

We understand that the forums are not exactly the best to role play. Ask anyone who role plays somewhat decent, and they may reveal that they role play in other forums more than dothackers. However, it doesn't mean that the role play section itself is that terrible. Trust me, I've seen worse.

Everyone is allowed their opinion. I'm sure that there are many places that can suit your needs if you just look around and take a good look. Thank you for your interest in the forum role play section.

People keep coming back to the topic of this forum sub-board. Why. Every response I've made regarding forum roleplay is just that.; A blanket statement regarding forum roleplay in general.

I've not at all commented on the quality of this board at all. Not once. So why do people keep trying to make me out as someone 'judging' their roleplay board? Why is everyone getting all defensive?

Get out of my thread.

You are an idiot, and an absolute driveler. Way to go, taking the moral high ground and all, imbecile. People like you are why I don't forum roleplay. At least in games, I could block jerks like yourself.

And by the way; 3 members online per day is pretty dead. There are more americans that play the PSUJP server than that.

Edit; Who do you think YOU are??

It's New Years, why are you debating and fighting about forums and RPs and whatever else when you should be with your family getting drunk and having fun? D:

It's nice that you come with an offer to join seemingly interesting RPs in another place, but it's not anymore when you start critizing everyone else and try to fight back against opinions that don't agree with you. Not the best way to invite people when you're not even respecting the place you're in D:

Whoever's gonna join there, will join for their best of interests. Whoever won't, simply won't and you should respect that as well. People who do RPs just want to have fun and enjoy a good time with other members. Our members might not be the best at RPs, everyone can be aware of that, but they have fun doing what they do and you shouldn't be so aggresive on it. The invitation is open for anyone to join there, i have nothing against that...but don't be attacking everyone else for what they do or don't do. You're not only breaking the rules but you're simply gaining the hate of everyone for pointless reasons.

Just be chill, everyone ~3~
