That was the original intention of the SEED creators believe it or not. The original intent was to re-create the feel and story of the original Kidou Senshi for the new generation of Mecha Otaku to come. While the attempt was good, the product was FAIL! I'm sorry but when you have TWO Char clones in the same series, I feel bad for your storyboarder. Mu La Flagga and Rowla Kruset? More like Quattro Bajeena and Char Aznable in the same show. YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!!

This is probably one of my favorite series. Not only did this show start the gundam franchise but it also started the "Real Robot Genre" that inspired other realistic mecha anime's like Macross.

Back then pretty much everything was a "Super Robot" type show, mainly doing stuff like calling out attacks and doing things that defy the laws of physics, and were usually created by either mad scientists or excentrick millionairs to fight aliens.

Yoshiyuki Tomino created a show that was a war drama. With realistic characters and mecha that look like they could be built for real, and even had realistic problems like malfunctions and needing maintenance and even on a few occations running out of parts.

Unfortunatly it was cut short. MSG was originally going to be a 52 episode series. But due to poor ratings it was cancelled at 39 episodes. Luckfully Tomino got an extention to finish the series at 43 episodes. So its ending was somewhat rushed. It wasn't tell syndication that the show really got a following and sunrise decided to franchise it and made the 3 movies cut from the TV series. And over the years Tomino would come back to direct other gundam shows like Zeta Gundam.

After doing MSG Yoshiyuki Tomino earned the nick name of Yoshiyuki "Kill Em All" Tomino cuase a lot of his latter shows usually ended with most if not all of the characters dying in the end. Such as 'Space Runnaway Ideon' and 'Aura Battler Dunbine'. He says he does it because he doesn't want to be locked into doing sequells to his shows. But some of his more recent shows haven't ended in a complete kill fest, like 'Overman King Gainer'.

Slight correction. The original "Real-Robot" series, also created by Tomino, was Xabungle. Although received much less exposure, and was a little silly for it's time, Xabungle was considered the original "Real-Robot" series. It wasn't until Kidou Senshi Gundamu, with it's iconic title opener "Tobe! Gundam!" that the "Real-Robot" genre got any real exposure, since "Super Robot" series, headed by giant Go Nagai, such as Mazinger Z and Getter Robo, were the robot series of the time. It should be noted that Mobile Suit Gundam was considered the true "Real-Robot" series opener, since Xabungle had some rather super robot-esque themes to it, since the original Super Robot Wars games started with Mazinger, Getter, and Gundam. Sorry for that rant, but I thought the knowledge would be nice to know.

It's like they spliced in the worst parts of original Gundam and Wing, though. And did it again for 00. I'm happy with a team of invincible dudes where you pick your favorite robot and root for it. Or I'm happy with random people dying to make the whole thing more realistic. But do both and kill off the guy with (imo) the coolest Gundam two series in a row? That's unforgivable. Gundam Wing wouldn't be nearly as popular if they randomly killed off Trowa near the beginning... Maybe I'm just bitter because I drew the short straw twice in a row, but my experience went like this: "Oh neat, a stealth bomber Gunda-" *BOOM* "WHAT THE HELL!" And more recently, "Oh look, a sniper Gun-" "DAMN IT!" Twin brothers do not solve the problem, if anything they make it all a whole lot stupider. There, I'm done...

I was MUCH more disappointed with Grahm Achker's Mr. Bushido crap. I loved his character in 00, in fact, he was the ONLY character I liked. That and I still can't stress enough the double Char cloning in SEED.

I just checked around to be sure, but it looks like Gundam really is the first real robot show. Mobile Suit Gundam was made in 1979 and Xabungle was made in 1982. There's a full list of Tomino's shows according to the year they were made on Tomino's Wikipedia profile: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshiyuki_ ... ilmography
