I heard a story about this once, but I can't remember all the details, so here's a simplified version: One time, a man had to go to work and stay late. He came home and parked his car in the garage, when he saw a man lying on the ground. He noticed the man had bird wings with white feathers. He woke the man up, and the man told him he was an angel. He promised to grant him one wish if he wouldn't tell anyone about this. The man thought long and hard and said, "I wish for world peace..." The angel granted the wish and vanished. The man, being very tired, went to bed. He awoke the next morning to find everyone on the entire planet was dead.

I heard that from my sister. Don't know where she got it from. It was quite a while ago too... so I'm sure this isn't very correct. But I got it for the most part.

thats actullay a good one, but hears how i see it. it is human nature to hate, to compete against each other and to want thers to think like us. so if there was world peace we wouldn't be human

I believe whole-heartedly in world peace, be it an absurdly optimistic viewpoint.
Unfortunately, I also think it will take something monumental for it to eventually happen. I've often had disscusions with friends about the existance of extraterrestrial life and what the effects of finding a sentient EBE (extra-terrestrial biological entity) would have one the whole of humanity. See, if we could only stop thinking of ourselves from simply our skin tones or nationalities or religions and instead call ourselves simply "human" then in that way, through the knowledge that we are not alone, can we come together as one species.

Of course the same scenario could occur after some sort of world-devestating nuclear hollocaust...but lets hope the EBE's land first XD.

Honestly... I think, logically, if other life does exist in this galaxy (which I have no doubt it does) it is unlikely that they would either come here themselves rather then use automated space probes or that they would be so interested in humans.
The whole aliens wanting to colonize Earth thing is silly as well, in my opinion. Most minerals and metals can be found on many worlds as well as water, and I would assume a civilization advanced enough to travese light years of distance easily would be able to sucessfully terraform even a desolate planet. After all, the only thing special about Earth is that it has liquid water. Atmosphere, plant and animal life - that all came later as a result of the liquid water.

Also, I do believe we can be human and still learn to love and accept our differences. It simply stems from a lack of education and a from our surroundings that the hatred is perpetuated. If we knew more about each other then that's the first step towards understanding. Sometimes I think more people should just read The Republic. Although a lot of Socrates' ideas are now out-of-date, many more of the ideas would perhaps aid in today's soscietal stress.
I do not believe it is impossible to have a logical and socratic sosciety, simply very very difficult.

no,becuase we would have to fight for that peace(as W said Iraq was for...)to kill for that peace,and if lives have to be sacrificed,then its not really peace.plus we have crazy koreans with bombs...

Humans in nature are too selfish and self-centered for that to be possible forever. We could have many periods of peace, but it'd always fail somewhere.

The only thing we can do is make sure peace lasts as long as possible before war comes yet again.

If there were more guns in this world there would be less shootings

This is the point that philosophy and humanity shows it´s darkest truth, dark and light are eternal as said many times by philosophers, so what makes us think that the day that only light will reign over the lands? It´s hope, humans believe bindly in miracles, prophecies, anything that brings hope, so it´s an unlimeted cycle of hope created by dark hours of our lives, make your conclusions... it´s better to still have hope than to live in misery, it´s unchangeable.

Anyway, it's not blind belief in magics or necromancy...it's very possible.
A sosciety dictated by logic, over emotion, as presented by Socrates, would be able to attain peace simply as the more logical choice of living. It's beyond us right now, but I don't think it allways will be.
I agree that it is better to find purpose and hapiness in the absurdity of our existance, but..I also think that it is possible for people to learn to accept each other at some point in time.
Like I said, if we are somehow able to become unified as the Human race rather then white, black, hindu, islamic, ect, ect. Then, in that way we can find a meeting point.

it will happen for about 3 1/2 years sometime in the future. after a 7 year peace treaty is signed between arab nations and israel but after 3 1/2years the treaty will be broken, and then the world will go to hell. thats the real word not "the world"

true peace is impossible like rick said there is no light with out dark. and if we got rid of the emotional part of the equation we would no longer be human.

Humans are incapable of holding peace, even in their personal space.
There will always be disagreements.
If individuals cannot keep their own peace, how can you possibly expect whole countries to agree?

The only way I can think of to acheive this goal is to bring all the land together and have one leader to rule everyone. and they'd have to be VERY strict, but fair..ish..
I'm not sure how to describe it.. but like.. murders don't jsut get killed, they get to watch their family die >< (that's not good but it'd be sorta fun...)

another way is to keep a constant watch on every human being and kill them if they are about to create conflict... <3
