Truth be told, the first four games are a big money hog, and not really worth the amount. But at the same time, I'm not really a fan of Final Fantasy.

Terminal disc (can be found on youtube) covers the 4 part series so no real need to buy the games.

FFXII is long, fun and worth its buck.

If the 4 part serise were rereleased on 1 disc then yea go for the 4 part series but since its not, its a no go.

EDIT: However the 4 part series acts as a real mmo versus GU. So if you wanted an mmo like .hack, thats your best bet.

Hmmm...that's really difficult. It depends on what FF you're thinking of buying too and what platforms you have.
For example, if the still have a GBA, getting the origional 4 games and Tactics Advanced is more of a bargain then the 4 .hack games, simply because they're just so good, in my opinion. However, if you're not a fan of "old school" games then, again it depends on precisely what FF you're talking about in relation. Everyone has a different opinion on which FF game is best, though many will highly recomend VII (not myself actually.)

You also have to look at the type of battle system. Most of Final Fantasy is consistantly ATB system with .hack is hack and slash. If you don't like ATB system RPGs, go with .hack. Final Fantasy pours a lot of money into cutscenes, so if you're more interested in that, go with Final Fantasy. FF is still a pretty basic RPG by most standards, while .hack tends to mix up some of the traditional elements by having you invite different party members and send e-mails for a more customizable experience.

You can't say one is better then the other, since it's all just opinion. My best guess is just to look at the aspects of each and deciede what you like more, judgeing by previous gameing experience
