I've read the manga and seen the anime series. Why are there such major inconsistencies between the two when it is supposed to be the same story?

For example:  Zephie doesn't show up in the anime and  Rena never disappears in the manga.

Which one is right: manga or anime?

And now that I'm thinking about it, you see a lot more of Sanjuro in the anime series. He's a really important character. In the manga, I think you only see him once or twice.

Manga is right. Anime is not (and Aura Twilight explains why in the topic linked).
