How was it a total failure? It had lots of players, lots of guilds, and they were pretty happy with it. I can't even count up to the number of level 99 players there were last time I checked, so I'd consider it successful. I suppose there's a sort of sour grapes thing going on here, and also the fact that because news was so obscured by dumb rumors to begin with everyone was imagining that it would use the G.U. engine or be completely different from the original games or something (all of which was obviously untrue from the very first press release). If you didn't like the original games, you wouldn't like fragment, but then again I find it hard to believe you'd like .hack if that were the case...AuraTwilight wrote:.hack//Fragment was a total failure. I don't see a GU version being any more successful.
The only way fragment could have possibly met the expectations of fans caught up in these rumors would have been to have a subscription model (i.e. not be free), destroy the Root Towns, tone down level progression, add a lot more equipment, make exp gain slow as hell, make a fully-editable character creation system, and rework the entire field system to be more mmo-workable. In doing these things, it would actually end up not being The World of the .hack universe, plus it would cost money... In my opinion, that wouldn't be .hack anymore, so why not just play WoW?
One thing I've noticed about G.U. is that there's a lot more "room" for this sort of upgrade. R:2's Mac Anu would actually survive in a real MMO, plus it would be very, very easy to expand further. Tying skills to classes and not weapons is also much better for a real online game, and 150 is a very arbitrary cap, they could easily raise it. Call this foresight they gathered from making fragment. So yes, I think if they did it again, it would be a lot better.

Just want to say I'm not arguing with you here. Your whole post makes complete sense and I agree with every word. But I do think it's possible to like the .hack franchise and not be enamoured with the first games. I got into it because of SIGN, and played the games mostly for the story rather than the gameplay.Kuukai wrote:If you didn't like the original games, you wouldn't like fragment, but then again I find it hard to believe you'd like .hack if that were the case...

I already have a .hack//GU online game written on paper (because I got nothing better to do) called .hack//NET. But I'm not going to send it to BandaiNamco for reasons Auratwilight will most likely yell at me for. But yeah, that would be cool. It could work too, seeing as thought GU is a lot better then the old style of the lat games

when and if technology gets better, good enough to make a succesful "the world" game then i think we would all want a copy, no data bugs(maybe for events) and small little stories, a real " the world" as seen in the anime not the game. maybe it'll get boring, but it wouldn't be much more different than everything else.
I completely wish there was an online G.U., as long as it wasn't like Fragment, as in you can't pick party members and stuff, and you HAVE to have party members. And have it a real MMORPG. Who cares how much money it is, I would pay about anything. And the arenas would be more fun, as they are real players. And the Guilds, it would be awesome to have my own guild. As for class, Adept Rogue - Tribal Grappler and Partizan or Flicker.
