Since there is a topic involving Tsubasa, I thought I should make another topic regarding its sister project; xxxHOLiC.
I'm quite into this one, its dark and rather sinister, while not scary, the anime has successfully creeped me out on a number of occasions.
My favourite character is Yuuko, mysterious, dark, yet a chronic alcoholic and quite mad. I especially love how she puts Watanuki through hell.
So...just discuss your opinions on xxxHOLiC, I guess.

waaaaaaaaa there is just so many characters i like T_T I like Watanuki because he is funny XD but i also like Yuuko because of her mystery and how kool she is. Will never forget her moves in the Movie. Domeki is so kool with his scilent nature. Modoki is cute and funny. I don't know much about Hiwarii-chan though.
hmmmmmmmm. . . .I guess I would have to pick Yuuko. She thinks like me so i have the closes bond to her.

Woot, XXXHOLiC. Voted Doumeki for favorite, was hard to decide though since Yuuko is also a great character. I've only read a little of the manga and seen two or three episodes of the anime... should get caught up on this series. I like how the emotion quite different from Tsubasa, like Umbra said it's sinister without the cheesy scary ghosts and massive amounts of blood.
Loved the movie, A Midsummer Night's Dream. It had an interesting story and I liked it better than the Tsubasa one actually. Some parts were... creepy would be a fitting word.

Doumeki=Total smexyness
Not only is he an awesome athlete and really hawt, he's totally selfless and saves/helps Watanuki on several occasions. Like when Watanuki was cursed by a spider and his left eye was totally screwed up, he took the curse up on himself to spare nuki-kun. Or the angel-san episode where he injures his arm to save him ^^ Go Doumeki!

I love the angel ep :3. Thats the reason why i like Doumeki is because he is that way. I also like how he plugs his ears when Watanuki starts yelling.

I like the manga much better than the anime. Doumeki is probably my favorite character. But Yuuko might be also. She's so deliciously evil and manipulative.

That's a strangely common occurance in anime, to have a main character that acts in such a way that people dislike them. There's Watanuki in xxxHOLiC, Tsukasa in .hack//SIGN, Haseo in .hack//Roots, and the famous example of Shinji in Evangelion...off the top of my head.
I guess its similar to the Shinji Complex as summarised by AuraTwilight.

I like shinji o.O also I like Watanuki. I feel sorry for what happen to him and his background is so mysterious.

Don't get me wrong, if you couldn't stand the main character then there'd be no point in watching, what I mean is that the main character generally has faults. Tsukasa is introvert, Haseo is a coward, Shinji is emotionally stunted, and Watanuki complains a lot of the time. Far from making us dislike the characters, we want to see them become a stronger person and this is why we watch.
But as humans, we naturally seek the person that is stronger than ourselves, or the person we know nothing about. If a person is stronger than ourselves, we tend to idolise them and hope that we will become as strong as them. If a person is mysterious, we pay attention to them because we want to try and figure out what they're really like. This is why the general love interest stereotype is the 'strong and silent type'. Its not a rule, but it is the general outline of idolisation.
Yuuko is probably the most popular because she is so strong and mysterious, while Doumeki, another strong and mysterious character, is equally popular.
I like all the examples I gave myself, but I prefer Sora over Tsukasa, Saburou over Haseo, Rei over Shinji, and Yuuko over Watanuki. For me, it is an enigmatic personality that I like, so I will go with the strangest and most mysterious characters generally.
