Kill La Kill

Post by Kaori »

A 2013 anime produced by Studio Trigger. A relatively new studio's first television production wouldn't normally raise too many eyebrows when it's announced... Unless said studio happened to be made up of ex-Studio Gainax and Studio 4°C members and the production's director and lead character designer also worked on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann together.

Eh, so basically it's Gurren Lagann with superpowered clothes rather than mechs.

It's more retro than Gurren Lagann, it's designed (and run through a digital filter) to look like something from the 1970's, but with way better animation, and a visual appeal almost out of American full animation from the 50's or something (See: the Twelve Basic Principles of Animation). It's by far the best show this season, and this is a good season. In an era of American animation moving towards lazy flash and 3d stuff, and where most animated shows in both countries put more of an emphasis on the "idea" than the expression, it's cool to see a show that moves like Ren and Stimpy. It's so fun just to watch the characters, the story barely matters. I just want to see more of Mako and her family.

Also Balmung voices one of the student council members.

Yeah it's probably the best anime for this fall. I just wanna sing "~Row Row Fight Da Pawa~" when I watch it---it radiates a wayy to familiar GL vibe.

Simply put, it's the only one this season that's not MOE. And that's why it's the best of the season.

Incorrect:
-Golden Time
-Samurai Flamenco
-BlazBlue (mostly)

And those are just the good ones, not counting abominations like Log Horizon.

Also not an anime but GAIM is awesome. It's by an anime writer, at least.

Wait, you're telling me Golden Time isn't a MOE anime... With that art style?

I'm guessing it's another .hack knock-off?

Anyway, I'm starting to see something in this anime:

Hmm, maybe it is, but my case remains.
Kaori wrote:I'm guessing it's another .hack knock-off?
It rips off parts of both .hack and Sword Art Online.

I think of this show more like Gunbuster...

Log Horizon clearly makes innuendos towards SAO and .hack, but it's not the same universe at all behind the fact it looks like an MMO. This anime could have been great... But people's reactions are not credible, and characters are stereotypical. What makes MMO based anime great is the psychological aspect of players reacting to what happens in a game when it's not expected to happen. Real players in a game. Log Horizon is more like (cliché) anime characters in a game, it seems to lack of depth for what I've seen (ep 4) when compared to SAO and .hack.
Don't misunderstood me, though. If you ignore the (frustrating) fact that it could have been way better, it's still quite good. I've never been bored watching this anime, and it has some interesting ideas. Worth a try, I think. And it can improve over the time, who knows.

No offense mate, but this is a Kill La Kill thread, I'll work on the Log Horizon thread later.

So, has anybody watched the recent episode? It's Filler, but a VERY entertaining filler.

Yup, sorry for that. I wasn't sure if it was ok to post it here, but I followed the flow of the thread.

About Kill La Kill, I haven't watched the last episode yet. The anime has been quite epic until now (as said before, the best one of the season atm), but I hope it won't rely only on this 'fight per episode' scheme until the (supposed) final big fight. It could lost a lot of interest.

The recent episode was kinda shocking, I can't believe  Sanageyama would have his own eyes sewn shut, just to beat Ryuko.

That was indeed weird, but this last episode was a bit more classic than usual. Not bad, though, just not as surprising as were the others :)
I really can't bear  Sanegayama character's type : "hahaha I'm too powerf- oh **** I'm so bad pardon me plz plz *get upgraded* hahaha I'm too cool and powerful". He needs to be punched more.

Has anybody watched the latest episode yet?  I get the feeling Satsuki is letting Ryuko do some of her work by rooting out the unworthy clubs, but I still couldn't get over the previous episode.
