Do i have to re-type my answer here? XD

Anyways, maybe others will agree or disagree, but i say that the best option is a Dell or Toshiba with Core i7. It's perfect for what you ask for...multiple programs used at once, including documents, messaging applications, web browsers with applications running in them, editing programs, MMO's and even Minecraft if you feel like it (a game which usually takes up a lot of memory).
I have a Dell Inspiron with Core i5 and it's been so perfect for all that and more. Sure, it might not be THE best for gaming, or THE best for web browsing, but it IS the best to do all those things at once without any problem. And you can easily find a computer with i7 at around $800 or so, so it's perfect for your budget as well :3
And of course, also look for having at least 4GB of RAM...though pretty much all new computers come with that, especially if it's i7. Same with HDD space, being at around 500GB.

Its ALWAYS more cost effective to build it yourself. And you can look up a youtube video on how to put it together with your old comp.

Also, I STILL say any computer running Vista or W7 is just a waste of space. XP does EVERYTHING I need it to, and even things the other 2 can't. Even after trying W7 Ultimate, I switched back after noticing a few problems on top of the things it couldn't do that I used to do all the time!

Anyway, I'm not much help here, all I can say is: Prebuilt P.O.S. PCs tend to get viruses quickly, and are filled with TONS of bloatware, yet cost 2x as much as they're worth.

Any HDD with more than 500GB and a i7 Intel Core Processor is a must.

Must agree, my 160GB SATA HDD from 2004 just isn't cutting it anymore. The i7 though, not so much. Intel's way too expensive for cores of equal performance with AMD, and AMD ones work better with custom PCs because of the gfx card compatibility.

Either AMD or Intel, they both work.

I'll make it simple.... Dual core 2.0 or higher, and buy it a Graphic card of 3.0 of higher (if it doesn't has one) and buy sum more memory when it needs it, like 5 GBs more or so....

This one's worth it for the price, though I still hate windows 7.

i7 Cores work great; I have one in my desktop compy, and everything's smooth and quick. Got mine for about $950, tax included.

Of course a good graphic card, good size RAM and HDD space aren't all bad either. 4GB RAM and 500GB of HDD space should be enough.

Actually I'd argue that 500GB isn't enough. My 1TB external only has 339GB left on it because I keep downloading series in higher quality than most DVDs. If you're a high quality music person then FLAC format takes up so much space you'll be pressed to get a 1TB AT LEAST.

I don't really bother with FLAC tbh, I usually go for 320kbps MP3s. If I want anything lossless, I'll just pop a CD in and listen to it from there.

But you do raise a good point.
