Animation software

What is the best animation software? I'm doing a senior project that involves animation and I don't really have much knowledge on the subject. I need to know what the best FREE software is for creating fairly high quality 2D animation (like cartoons) and 3D animation (like Pixar). I already have the program Blender but I'm not sure if that's good for a first-time animator. Please help! My graduation depends on it! Thank you in advance.
