Death Note (Is it good?)

The topic pretty much speaks for itself. I've been searching for some good, psychological anime to watch, you know, the ones that have complex plots that make you think. I came across several recommendations from friends, and the two anime that were said the most, was Code Geass and Death Note, though I've already seen Code Geass, including the Revision 2 season, and to me, it wasn't as intellectually deep as I thought, which disappointed me a bit, but Death Note sounded interesting. However, I wish to gather some opinions about it before I watch it. So, how is it? Good? Bad? Please discuss as you wish.

I'd say it's pretty good and I'm overly critical or things especially anime post 2000. Though I never really found it to be anything intellectual or anything of the sort (then again I'm not one to over analyze things with few exceptions) and I'd much rather read the manga. Can't really discuss more without going into plot spoilers.

I never found Death Note to be much of a brain twister. Although, I did enjoy it quite a bit. You might check out Serial Experiments Lain. Lain is very slow-paced though so if you're looking for something with some action I wouldn't recommend it. But if you're purely interested in a wtf is going on kind of thing then I do. Evangelion is a good one as well. It's got the action as well as the complex plot. Paranoia Agent was actually the first thing that came to mind when you said "psychological anime." I guess I'll mention Saikano as well. It's another slow-paced one. I don't know if I'd say it's plot is especially brain-straining but it's got some love story going on too if you're interested.

Death Note is a good series. You should watch it. Why? Because everyone else has.

I'm going to echo what a lot of people have already said: it's surprisingly good. It's definitely psychological, in the same vein as Monster or something. I love it and I'm not very big on Code Geass. I was actually really enthusiastic about Code Geass at first, based on the mechanics (I'm a huge fan of unconventionally ugly robots, and Akiman in particular) and the CLAMP character designs and Gundam funeral reference, but uh, yeah, I hate Lelouch and lost interest pretty fast. Death Note on the other hand is a great show for the people who love to hate the douchebag protagonist. I like the movie ending a little better though. Well, not the third movie...

In retrospect, I liked the early parts of Death Note, but ended up hating the series as a whole. Strange part is I enjoyed the live action films more than the anime and manga.
I think the main reason I didn't like it there at the end was that Light wasn't ruthless enough to kill the investigators he worked with all at once. I mean, he could even synchronize their deaths to the exact second, have a maid come in and kill them with chloride gas (ammonia + bleach, common cleaning items), have her clean the room spotless then commit suicide, and he could be completely untouchable! So what if his father dies? His dad was willing to kill him, and Light could've just passed it off as an accident while he wasn't there! Not to mention his mom and sister knew nothing of both Mr. Yagami's investigation and Light's involvement in it. But no, Light had to be a pushover and get killed by Matsuda of all people! It sickens me.

Death Note is alright up to the end of the first 'half.' After that it really does get a little annoying and the ending can be slightly disappointing.

Meh.
The idea was cool.
But then I watched it and was like...could've been better.
The idea could have been much better I think.
Not a fan.
The manga might be good (I've never read)

IMO, it got better after L died. I LOVED L's replacement (forgot his alias). My favorite episode was when Light dies, but that's just me. I say watch it if you wanna hate the asshole that is Yagami.

Why all the spoilers?
anyway L's replacement was M and N (N is probably who you're thinking of since he was a lot like L)

Near and Mello (Grunty)!! :D I hate them both but Mello had his moments.
And Death Note is actually a very great series, not exactly "deep psychological" (this is no Lain or Evangelion), but it sure is all a huge "intellectual" battle that makes you think alot and analyze details very hard. I'd really recommend you watching it if you want an anime about intellectual mindf*cking stuff, and not just action and battles with a simple story...though i recommend Death Note in general even if you're just a fan of the action without complex plots. It's really good :P
And i love Light Yagami and he's definetly one of my top favorite characters in all anime series...but he went pathetic and dumb in the second half, so i also agree that only the first half of Death Note is awesome. The second half is still good...but, it's somewhat more action paced, and WAY DUMBER than it was in the first half, with many obvious things, many stupid mistakes from the characters, and NOTHING like the freaking uber-smart geniuses battle from the first half. And i'm not just saying this because of my admiration to Light...i agree that he just couldn't be the winner forever and the "good" had to triumph...but that was a pathetic way to lose, like if you were the only survivor of the biggest war in the story of mankind, surviving hundred of shots and explosions....and then died by choking on a fish bone :/
lol, Fun fact is, soon after i finished watching Death Note (took me about 3 days), i actually bought a Death Note myself, developed a new habit of carrying apples for lunch, and overall behaved and had the way of thinking as if i was Kira, sometimes even saying random quotes and even working in "hiding" my identity, like if i really had to hide the fact i was some "justice mass murderer". This of course was by the same moment of my life where i was the anti-social emo hardly approached by anyone. It was a very amusing phase to remember XDD lol

What do you expect? Tales of Fate.
I just wish was more painful for him. Like before he died he realized that everything he did was wrong and died grieving and filled with anger and disgust and a very painful death.
I guess you can tell I really didn't like Light at all.... :/

Hell Yeah Death Note was Not Only Good.... I'ts Grrrrreat! (Lame Tony the Tiger Ref.). If Your Someone Like Me Who Plays Chess on His Computer to pass Time and Uses the Same Concept in Many Other Games That Relate to It. This is Your Ideal Favorite Anime. Near Set Light Up for the Checkmate Only Light Would've Won, But Because Mello and Takada's Deaths and Mikami and Light Writing Takada's Name at slightly Off Times Proved a Fake Notebook and Cost Him Dearly Leading to Matsuda Shotting Him Then Ryuk Writing Light's Name In His Deathnote Since He'll Die in Jail or From His Gun Shot Wounds. But What I Liked The Most Was When Before Light Died He Saw L In a Moment That Kinda Gave That in The End L Beat Light Since L's Death His Piers Who Wanted to Surpass L So Much That They Beat Light So Surpassing L Was is What Motivated Them Being in a Way L Had His Part in Beating Light. So I Don't Think The Question is "Is Deathnote Good?" But Being "Was Deathnote Good?" The Answer is Yes.

In the Manga, Light dies in the warehouse. Put simply, the anime and the manga are simililar enough to understand the story. However, the problem is that many characters don't get as fleshed out as they were in the manga. For example, Matt, who works with Mello, gets very little exposure during the anime. If you missed him, he's the one who dies on the motorcycle.
The only time Near is cool is the epilogue chapter.
