During the Code Geass: The Miraculous Birthday OVA event, they announced that a new Side-Story anime was in production:
Code Geass: Side Story- The Ruined Land of Akito
The Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion Kiseki no Birthday event video release is announcing a new anime project called Code Geass Gaiden Bōkoku no Akito on Friday. The side story is set in the European warfront, where a unit made of boys and girls from Zone Eleven is sent into a military operation with a 5% chance of survival.

Update: The BIGLOBE website began streaming the event video at midnight on Friday. The event video is also available in Japan on Blu-ray, DVD, and UMD.

Update 2: Kazuki Akane (Escaflowne, Noein - to your other self, Birdy the Mighty Decode) is directing off scripts by Shigeru Morita (Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, Toward the Terra, Blood+). As in the previous two television series, Takahiro Kimura is adapting CLAMP's original character designs for animation. Akira Yasuda is also returning to design the mechanical Nightmare units. The anime studio Sunrise, the previous Code Geass director Goro Taniguchi, and the previous series script supervisor Ichiro Okouchi are credited with the original story.

The new side story is set in a.t.b.2017. A Knightmare unit made of boys and girls from Zone Eleven are thrown into a military operation with a 5% chance of survival. They must rescue an allied unit left behind on the European warfront.

Elevens (Japanese) that are apparently Honorary Brittanians (I think) but they're sent into a military operation involving the geass with 5% of survival.

Hmmm...
It might be good. If it has the original characters in it then I'll most cetianly be watching it. It's hard for me to get used to and like new characters from series were its has whole new story lines.

Gundam Seed Destiny was only partially watchable for me. While I loved the new characters and machines that were introduced, it quickly became apparent that the writers were just trying to service the fans of Kira and Athrun.

Now, while I adore Lelouch and Suzaku, their story has already been told. I want to hear somebody else's tale.

I have to admit, this better be extremely interesting, because outside of the Lelouch-shenanigans and learning about the mysteries of Geass, the actual political/war story was not entertaining to me.

I never thought it was covered all that well, and only briefly explained during the opening few episodes of each season. Maybe this will help to explain it better...

The semi-canonical Nightmare of Nunnally manga gave a pretty satisfactory explanation, but you're totally right, and that's what I'm hoping for this anime to do. But it doesn't seem like any of these characters are going to know CC, so how the hell are they going to learn this information? Is there a third character with a Code out there?

Also, for anyone curious how the above manga explains Geass,

Basically, all the various Code Geass stories are alternate universes in the same multiverse, and they're all different, simultaneous dreams of God, expressing itself as the individuals who inhabit the universe. Strife, conflict, and conflicting wills is the only way it can know itself, since a single consciousness with no friends or enemies is the same as no consciousness at all. So that it can influence the course of the world to the ending it wants, where it learns some sort of cosmic truth about itself, some people are given the power of Geass so that, between their personalities and powers, they can direct history in the direction God wants. With this in mind, Charles' plot of "killing God" was to end the dream prematurely by destroying the universe and sending all souls back to God, causing it to wake up without having learned anything and essentially being screwed over.

I hope this is canonical to the "main" Code Geass universe, because I found it damn satisfying.

^ Wow I didn't know any of that, makes the series seem twice as good.

Personally, I think this sounds like an awesome idea!

Sure, I'm going to miss Lelouch and everyone else but the new characters sounds promising. I can't wait until this series comes out! Every Code Geass fan should watch this for the sake of the fandom.

I think that it will be interesting to see what they do with it. Of course, by the time it gets an English translation dub, it will slowly degrade into a pile of mush. Defiantly needs some more harder puzzles.

So it's a prequel, mainly covering certain, untouched areas that R:1 and R:2 never explained? and not just a random alternate re-telling of a similar plot?
