I noticed this when Azure crow and I were sharing video links, and I sent him a video of a song sung by a female character in the anime-style game, Lunar: The Silver Star Story Complete. He was deeply moved by this video, and became the most recent person to have been awe-stricken by my coolness.
We started wondering where this sweet style went, and thought back. He pointed out that the year FFVII was released was right around the time things changed. Games and anime started to look different, and animation styles started gearing towards newer, fan-friendly, "cooler" looks, instead of the simpler, nostalgia-inducing designs we saw before this. Now most anime have a reclusive or even downright mean main character who softens as the series goes on, and slowly lets people in. And they usually have this character start the series simply hunting someone down out of hatred.
Anyway, it seems the old, timeless epics are fading. Some remain, but styles have begun to shift in the way of the new look.
I wanted to know what opinion you have on the changes. Love is still a prominent theme, but it often takes a backseat to the action and violence it seems fans want nowadays. I personally miss the old stories and animation, and the stronger, deeper characters.

It's kind of funny you should mention this. I was watching some old animes on youtube, then I went on a website that has many images from newer animes and I found that what you say is very true. While the stories mostly now focus on bloodshed and other unusual topics, the old ones are very moving sometimes.

Well, I like the production quallities of the newer ones, but the whole, 'I hate u I will kill joo!' Type of thing, and the whole, 'I wuv you but can't show it because of my rep.' thing is getting pretty old, pretty fast. But, I have to admit, that the creativity of new moves and weapons is outstanding. Take Tite Kubo's Bleach for example. They took the idea of swords containing spirits, and swords containing powers, and combined them, making something so simple so epic. It kinda brings back the kiddish argument when you were playing an old fantisy game you made up on the spt during lunch at school. 'But I do this! Nu uh! I kill you with this! Nu hu! Ya ha! Nu uh! Ya ha!'.....I think you get my point.....It just basicly gives a new appeal, making new anime favored among old, but with evewry positive, there's a negative, and the new anime has it's negatives. Refer to my first sentance for one. Anyways, I kinda like the new anime then the old.....And on a side note, you are cool, but I'm not awe struck. Cool guys can't be struck by other cool guys.....Bad for our rep.

Anyways,I was one of the two who idealed this,and I wa sgoing to be the one to post this thread,but I had to go so Marth did it instead of me.

I actually noticed this myself when I looked at the differences bewtween Kite and Haseo.
Or better yet,the older animes and game,such as Dragon Quest and Dragon ball,vs the newer,such as Death Note,and Gundam Seed.
Things are changing to a more "meck-like" look,in some places,and leather has become a dominant player in most characters clothing now.
It's sad to see sucha a classic,good style of animation and sotrylining fade away.

The changes,as I had in the original draft od this thread,were concluded by MarthWmaster and myself to have started arounf the time of FFVII,which focoused ona military design,and was avery popular game.
It's popularity likely made others follow the design style.

Maybe you should just make your own style anime.

You know what? The people that make anime and manga are caving into the demands of fanboys/girls. Everything is so moe. What ever happened to characters with depth, emotion, proper body structures.

Yeah old anime was pretty good I like SOME new ones, ussaly not mainstream like naurto,( god i hate naruto, yes naruto
fans i went there). Yugio was decent enough for me to sit threw until they came out with "GX" . Yeah..old and non mainstrem
are aweomse. Only mainstream I like is FMA dunno if its mainstream or not, kinda feels like it.

You got a major fear of conformity..to bad....

Naruto is one of the ones that actually has depth,although it still shows the whole "My motive is killing" thing,which is way to common.

FMA rocks.
It is a good blend of old and new.And it has great depth,and a great backstory.


Newer animes interest me,sure,but it's not the characters anymore,it's the looks.That's what bothers me.
Gundam SEED,actually,got on my bad side with that,although I still watch it.
Every girl in it has great bodies,and large breasts,and explotions and flashy colours are everywhere.
Every character is beautiful,and fan-servicey to some point,and they include as many almost-naked-girl characters as possible.
In my opinion,at her age Lacus should not look like she did.
Although Lacus won me over with the now-so-rare "singing girl" attribute that was lost in the transfer form old to new,which I absolutly love to see.

And on the subject of female characters,almost every anime has either A)a girl with huge breasts,B)A girl with a great body,C)A girl with skimpy clothing or D)All of the above.
In toher words,a fan character.
And notice how male character outfits usually get tighter arounf the abs,to define the chest and stomach more?
Yeah...exactly.
Point is,things are becoming sexy.While this is good to the eyes,it usually takes huge lumps off of character development and storyline,when the combined total of all the bath scenes in an anime amount to an episode to each 10 or so.
Not that i'm complaining,as a guy,but I am complaining as an anime and story lover.

Anime back in the day set a standard.Then somewhere along the line it got flawed.Take Akira.Great movie.You never see its kind anymore thou.

Bleach is the only exception. The girls look nice, but Orihime's the one shown usually, and playes a new role in moast new animes.....The healer. When was the last time you saw a healer in new anime? With all the action going on, they forgot about the good old defencive side.....And whenever I play any fighting game, besides .hack of course, I always be the healer. If I'd still be the healer in .hack, I'd put Atoli on Rage.....Stupid, huh? On the subject of movies, Spirited Away is still one of my faves.....Never saw the rest of his movies, though.....I should rent them sometime.....

No,there are other exeptions.
Such as //Sign.

Thank god,though,that it's starting motivation isn't "I must kill _______",which get's old after a while.

You know...now that you mentioned Gundam Seed...I remember buying a used game over at GameStop which was a Gundam game, that was made in like 2000 or something. Anyway...I was looking at some of the clips considering I just started the game and all...and I noticed the little HARO balls that were there and I was like...wait a second...they just re-added that element into Gundam SEED.

And I agree with what you're saying there. I'm a bit of a writer myself...somewhat.

The old Gundam series like Gundam Wing, which I still found good...had more to show than the new ones. (I still need to check out the older ones though).

Though some of the old anime series back then might have died out...doesn't mean the story still isn't good. I mean...I'm watching a movie called "X", which was made back in 1996. And after seeing the trailer for it...what it lacked a bit in some animation (though most of it was good)...it made up for in storytelling.

The only generic main charactor is Chad.....And Ichigo, the one wih the big sword, gets his sword's final form in a small version. And, Tite Kubo adds a twist, giving him the ability to become half hollow, the evil spirits supposed to be defeated by sould reapers, the guardians of the spirit world. You just need to get to the part when Aizen dies. It get's really interesting from then on.

You can always watch older anime. There is more decent anime in a given decade than you really ever watch in a lifetime. Taking that into account I think it's a good thing that it changes and diversifies as time goes on.
