Was it ever explained why it manifests itself as a hand with an axe, and a tail/scythe/whip thingy?

No. That's just what it does. Otherwise you might as well ask if it's explained why the AIDA are black. Who cares?

AT has a point. It's just random configuration. Look at what happened to Sakaki. He looks like AIDA raped and shitted on him. :B

Ahh, fair enough then. I thought there might be some deeper meaning behind it, but if its just a random design, it doesn't matter.

its just a really strong AIDA.
The design is nothing special,as all infections have there own unique design.
