I saw a trailer for SIGN... somewhere... don't remember. XD My brother's friend had a few DVDs of SIGN and burnt them for us (Meaning me and my family). I was immediately interested, but not obsessed with it. SIGN never really interested me as much as the others, for some reason.
An Electronics Store we went to often (Because it sold video games. XD) started selling anime and manga. I saw LotTB (Manga) for sale, so my brother bought it. We hadn't realised it was the SECOND volume until afterwards, so we were completely lost. XD
I started looking up .hack on the internet, and learned about Kite, wondering "why he was called Shugo in the manga". XD;; So I bought the first and third LotTB volumes, which cleared things up a bit.
My other brother bought Infection for his birthday. XD I was no good at it at first, so I just watched him play, and I loved the story. ^^ Now I really liked the series. XD I bought Mutation with my birthday money, and he bought Outbreak the same year for Christmas. (We never did buy Quarantine. D:)
And one day, my two brothers found the E3 Trailer for GU. They told me to watch, and I did. :3 Ever since then I've developed a VERY large obsession- compared to what it used to be, anyway. XD

Being the RPG addict that I am back when Infection was about to come out I seen the preview for it on a website and noticed it was coming out the same time as Xenosaga EP 1, then also read that it was an action RPG and was like ahh got to get it.

So bought both games, started playing Xenosaga EP 1 first and after the first 2 hours of mostly just watching cut scenes I got to a point where I could save turned it off and ended up playing through .hack//Infection 3 times to get a perfect file and was addicted to it and went back to just filling out the Ryu books after beating Xenosaga EP 1.

And through the next three games I didn't have much to unlock in the way of the wallpapers and etc since soon as I converted my data pretty much every thing was unlocked except the specific stuff for that game ie the grunty wallpapers due to obsessive playing.

Then I kept hearing about there was an anime based on .hack, so started to pick up those dvds as they came out which was SIGN. And yea here I am.

I originally saw SIGN back when it was airing on TV and I was like "WTF? This is interesting!" I than read up on the internet and found out that the games came with some bonus anime...and sadly I bought IMOQ for Liminality, and then after that I felt inclined to buy a ps2. I than got LotT and I heard that it also had a manga so that came too. and of course I saw a GU trailer on G4 and that brings me up to now. Waiting for more of ROOTS to come out on DVD and GU vol 2 (and of course another birth and GU+)

I'm an RPG fan, picked up Infection, played through, became hooked and got as many .hack products that have been released here that's essential to the story. (No posters or toys, only figure I have is Haseo because of the special edition.)

Heard about on a message board(Majinken) from the admin. He showed some vids and discribed the plot to me. I picked up at GU and so far have been struggle-ing through SIGN(I like 'The World R:2 more...) and finished ROOTS. I played GU volume 1, along with Infection, Mutation and Outbreak(And spoiled my self to no end about Quarintine and GU vol 2 & 3).

I LUV .HACK//!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah... it was a while ago. I got interested when I started watching .hack//SIGN in the MIDDLE of the series! (you could only imagine how confusing it was... and yet, I still watched it. ><)
I had no knowledge whatsoever that there were PS2 games that had to do with it either.
Ok, so one time... I wanted to borrow Kingdom Hearts from my friend and without my request, lent me .hack//infection. She said, "PLAY IT! It is really awesome! If you happen to beat it, I have three more to the series." Well, what I really wanted was to play KH; however, I got bored at the beginning and just decided to play .hack//infection. lol So... I was like, "Oh snap! This seriously reminds me of Diablo II!" Well... in some form...
I told my little bro; he took over from there and we kinda switched back and forth in playing the game. He plays by day; I play by night. That's how it went for the rest of the series. ^^
Now that G.U is out, we have our own seperate files. (mine being the stronger one with 90 hours of playing XD)

Wow... there goes a chunk of my life... ^^;;

I honestly don't even know. D:

Actually, it started when SIGN first started airing. I actually never saw all of the episodes consecutively, rather in fragments. I never knew wtf was going on though. D: With those few episodes in the back of my mind, I went to Best Buy and saw .hack//Mutation (Best Buy is phail, so they only had that). As soon as I saw it, I was like: "OH HAY. IT'S THAT SERIES THING." I was unaware of the different mediums .hack was in. D:

YES, I STARTED WITH MUTATION. When I was playing it, I just kept thinking "BOY, NOTHING IN THIS GAME IS MAKING SENSE RIGHT NOW."
But, then I stole Infection from a friend. That's when everything connected. |D That followed along with Outbreak and Quarantine and of course finally...

G.U.

which ruined my life.

I had just been to the movies and had half an hour to kill before my ride came to get me, so I decided to look around a "Hollywood Video" (Blockbuster rip-off) across the street. Looking around, I found Infection (which had just recently come out), and it looked interesting so I rented it. After playing it, Mutation had come out but I didnt rent it, I waited a bit. I caught one random episode of Sign, and thought it was very interesting as well. So, I looked up Sign and saw they had DVDs, I bought the DVDs and watched them all, by that time all 4 .hack games had been released, so I got some money and bought all 4 (even though I already beat Infection, I wanted it all the same) and played right through them.
After that, I watched the first 4 episodes of Legend of Twilight and decided I hated it severly, and kinda gave up on .hack.... until GU of course.
I coughdownloadedcough roots and wacthed it all before GU came out, then bought Rebirth.
and, well, here I am.

I must say I like new .hack better than old .hack, but Sign will always hold a very special place in my heart, lol.

Newtype USA. My dad read an article on it, and rented .hack//SIGN. I got hooked, and eventually asked for //INFECTION for Christmas.

The one thing I remember most is beating Skeith (after how many tries since I kept screwing up) while argueing with my cousins. They kept on making fun of me since my crush was into .hack and anime also, and even played it in Japanese! That was another thing that definitely made me stay a fan.

After the games, I went on with some other horrid fandoms. Then I went back due to the hype of //G.U. and Futaba's /y/ board. :D

I coulda sworn I answered a question similar to this... Oh well, this is pretty old:

I think my sister told me about it, so I watched it. I thought it was interesting, so I kept watching. I liked it. Then, I heard about a game and thought "Well, a game would have to have more action..." so I bought it. And, we go from there...

I saw .hack//SIGN on the tele one day and fell in love with it. I think I started at the second episode or so. They ran it like twice then took it off which upset me.

Does anyone remember when CN used to air shows around 2:00 PM on Saturdays? Ones they were planning on airing later? Well, that's how I found .hack//SIGN. Back in '03 (I think), I saw the first episode; didn't really get it, and didn't really get to watch the entire show at that time. However, I always kept up an interest in the show.

Fast forward maybe another year (can't remember), when .hack//LotT anime starts airing; yeah, I actually stayed up till 1:00-2:00 AM (which seems like nothing now) to watch it. XP For some reason, I did like the show, but it didn't spark the same kind of interest in it like SIGN had.

And so, my interest in SIGN continued; I think I even bought the first soundtrack before even seeing more than two episodes of the anime; that's how desperate I was to get my hands on .hack. I even started making .hack//SIGN wallpapers without knowing much about the show. My brother even bought me a .hack//SIGN wallscroll I had really wanted for Christmas; so even though I didn't know any of the characters, I gazed in wonder at their forms.
(Okay, you get the picture now; I was obsessed. XP)

Then in '05, I saw a .hack//SIGN boxset on eBay "on only three discs!"; this is back when I didn't know diddly about bootlegs. So, I bought it, watched it, loved it. Watched the whole show in English then Japanese, back to back. I remember then getting the other soundtrack from AnimeNation; loved it, obsessed over it.
Then came .hack//LotT manga; that is when I realized just how much better the manga is from the anime. I probably re-read that manga three or four times rather quickly.
I think I also bought .hack//AI Buster around that time; loved that too, especially Lycoris.

So now go to Sakura-Con '06; I was planning on buying only .hack merchandise, and what do you know, I did just that. Bought the entire .hack//SIGN LE series, so I ended up giving my bootleg SIGN DVDs to a friend.
Around that time my birthday was coming up; at this point, I still hadn't played the games, so I asked for Infection and Mutation for my birthday, along with another .hack//SIGN CD. And I got them both; played them like crazy, went and bought Outbreak and Quarantine shortly after, and beat the whole game series over the summer. Loved it; loved the root towns, the music, and Liminality.

And from there, my .hack obsession sky-rocketed; spent all my money on .hack soundtracks, made even more wallpapers on theOtaku, continued to buy whatever I could; it came to a point where I even thought, "I'm going to buy as much .hack merchandise as I can!" Well, that crazy thought didn't last long; now the only things I really "collect" are the soundtracks.
Around the same time, I joined this site. Loved it. (Anyone seeing a pattern here?)
Also, over that magical summer of '06, I watched .hack//Roots; watched it, loved it, obsessed over it too. I'd been looking so forward to it, that after watching five minutes of it I pre-ordered the first soundtrack. Watched the first half of the series, and that's when my Shino obsession really started.

At that point, I heard about a new .hack game coming out, .hack//G.U. Got the SE, played the game, of course I loved it, then I went about ordering the soundtracks for that too.
And now you find me today; my latest entry into my .hack obsession being "The World".

These past two years have been the best and worst of my life. I'm glad I had .hack around, and I can only hope that I continue to love it for years to come. My obsession started with SIGN, like so many others, and now I've grown to love all the characters in every series. The concept has kept me interested all this time, but the general whole of it has kept me obsessed.

So ends my lengthy story...
