Did you read the Arc's Title ?
Episode 1-4 is named : Onikakushi
And episode 5-8 is named : Watanagashi. . . Its a different story arc and a different stories, though it takes in the same world ( Another Possibility by Hanyuu) and with the same character

Pictures of the new season, rawr. Looks MUCH better than the first one. (The anime-exclusive arc seems to be Rena surviving the disaster, you can see a picture of an adult that looks like Rena in the ruined school. And yay, Shion's going to school! X3)

You know, there's different arcs, different events and different survivors.
Keiichi survives in Tatarigoshi-hen and Tsumihoroboshi-hen, (not sure about either of them) Rena survives in Watanagashi-hen and Meakishi-hen, everybody survives in Matsuribayashi-hen iirc, etc.
And there's supposed to be more than a thousand Hinamizawas, but we've only seen about twenty of them. (including Daybreak) But after this second season of Higurashi anime and possibly some more manga chapters the Higurashi project will probably be dead and replaced with...

Well, the story is kind of good, but also confusing. The anime also skips alot of important stuff in the arcs, but since the games are only out in japanese you don't really have a choice but watch the anime or read the manga.
The anime's (first season) animation is really bad, but you'll get used to it. :/

  They all survived the recent time loop, the one where Rena went Wacky, but Keiichi set her sane again, and that they, for some reason, are still stuck in the time loop, eh? But still alive..

If Mion is dead in Season 2 i'll kill a monkey. The animation was bad? I never noticed xD

Like I said, all the different arcs have different survivors. >.>  Keiichi may have made Rena sane again in that arc, but the Hinamizawa disaster (as seen in Tatarigoroshi-hen) still occured.

I think that the survivors (the main characters atleast, too lazy to type up EVERYBODY) in the different arcs are:
(Keep in mind that the spoilar tag'd character on this list is very very much spoilar)
Onikakushi-hen:  Takano (Rena and Mion were killed by Keiichi, Keiichi commited suicide, Satoko killed in the disaster, Rika was demoned away, Shion didn't enter Hinamizawa in this arc.)
Watanagashi and Meakishi-hen: Rena,  Takano (Rika, Satoko, Mion and Keiichi were killed by Shion, Shion commited suicide, no disaster.)
Tatarigoroshi-hen: Keiichi,  Takano (Disaster, everybody dies, Keiichi magically survies.)
Himatsubushi-hen: No idea, 'cept  Takano
Tsumihoroboshi-hen:  Takano (I dunno who survived or died in this, the anime didn't give any details at all about the disaster in this one and I'm not so interested in this arc so I haven't read any theories)
Minagoroshi-hen:  Takano ( Takano pwns everybody, lolz!!1)
Matsuribayashi-hen: Everybody (Lol.)

Of course, most of these are only my theories...

So, in the end, if they are out of the time loop in season 2, we don't actaully KNOW who's alive at the moment? Jeebus, they should release it in june. Stuck = June.

Well, considering the picture we got for season 2. . At least Rena survived for one episode. And by looking at the situation. . I doubt its Rena from Watanagashi and Meakashi . . Why ? Because the incident doesn't occur, and why should anyone ask her about anything ? 0.0;

Btw, if you look at the puzzle for Tsumihoroboshi (The last one, when the Akasaka starts investigating Rena's journal). . I think Rena died in that loop. .

First: Double post = bad
Second: This is a horror... though the beginning is very fluffy, it quickly turns into lots of gore; I doubt Keichii will go out with anyone (rather, he'd more likely kill them than date them).

Wasn't the series great though? It didn't dissapoint me I liked how everyone would snap at some points. I took time off from being a Narutard to watch it.
