So as long as if you're not into the game at the time of Data Drain. You won't be put into a coma? Well this sure does explain the theory about only being comatose by shock from Data Drain.
Yata, Tokuoka, and a few others (mostly Yata), support the theory that it's not so much the occult idea of souls being trapped in a game, but the players being convinced the World is the real world, and mind over matter takes over from there. They momentarily "forget" That they're only playing a game, so once the Data Drain (which probably only keeps other people from logging in that character) takes effect, the mind is convinced they're dead and they go into a coma as a result. Hence why an AIDA-PC can PK someone and make them comatose without the use of Data Drain. A further, but less extreme, example is when Tsukasa, Bear, and Mimiru went to see Harald, and Mimiru fell off the cliff and was caught by Bear. "Bear, what happens if we die here?" "Calm down, it's just a game." "But...but your hand...it's sweaty, Bear. It's sweaty!"
Mimiru, scared for her life and overreacting, was slipping into the game, and her mind was creating false stimuli. If she died in that state, she would've created the simulation of death, and would have fallen comatose. It's not what you do to the Player, but what kind of mental state they're in that matters.

I always wondered why people didn't just take off their headsets. Like if skeith suddened came onto the field. I'd toss that sucker. I mean I know its probably for plot divice but still like.....headset toss.

That's because you think that you're in the game. You think you're about to be killed by some big shape of stones holding a red wand. So you try to run away from Skeith thinking that he's going to kill you, you forget about reality. Tokuoka would've been put into a coma if Mai didn't throw that headset away and slapped him awake. <_<

We can only hope thats the case. Skeith would be kinda freaky to see. Him and the other phases.

Well here's a better way to understand it. You know how the VR headsets give a Virtual Reality view of The World? It makes it look so real that you feel that you're in the game. This is what causes the comas, you see a giant terrifying monster (Phase) about to kill you. When it kills you it looks so real that you fall into a coma thinking you died.

Lol, no. Your body doesn't "think" its dead. In fact the comatose players can be interpreted in different ways. Not to mention at the end of VOL 4 of the origonal games the players minds were still in the game. The actually explaination is more like that there is some connection between the game and a person's mind and body. IE avatar control. In fact I'm sure if Haseo walked by a media cafe and yelled at "Skeith" something weird would happen. There has to be some connection to the real world.

No, the instruments that cause players to go comatose are the VR Headset and the human brain. -_-

Maybe they were driven to the point where they think that they are alive in the game. In SIGN,
Tsukasa made it out because she didn't want to stay and believed that it was just a game.

Even though the anime is noncanon, that is one of the most important proofs to the fact that falling into a coma is all about the person thinking that he/she is dead.

Tsukasa was a special case. She was trapped personally by Morganna and had her memory tampered with to the point where she forgot her real gender and thought the World was real.

Exactly. She was led to believe that "The World" was real and was better than the real world. In the end, she escaped Morganna by believing the opposite.

But she was special case. The rest of the coma victims when they appeared at the end of Quarentine knew exactly what was going on as did Sora. So merely believing the World is just a game won't necesserly revive you.

Morgaana didnt tamper with her memori? she was in the world she thought it was her real body...so she just kinda.... (at the risk of sounding perverted) probaly just looked down and put her hand on her chest and went "Oh...I am a guy!" because she was in the world she was a guy because thats hwo she made her character.

Morganna did tamper with her memory, which is why she believes "The World" is real.

She was interacting with Morganna to the point where she didn't want to leave, and Morganna Data Drained her to keep her in The World.
