O_O That's like asking the pope if he's holy.
it's controversial because it combine's angel's, which are part of catholasism, and the end of the world. It basically said 'All of your idea's of what god is going to do is wrong, and here's what's right.'
it's controversial because the basically show their interpretation of how the world began.
Anything like this which ,for lack of a better term, spit's in the face of religion and call's it a tear will alway's be controversial.
Are you serious? I must have been asleep for the whole series. I don't remember if this series even once offended me. You may be taking the use of the word "angel" a little too far here. Anyone who thinks these are the same angels that are spoken of in the Bible is messed up somehow. They use a lot of terms taken from Christian lore, but they aren't important words (at least IMO). If you're a Christian mystic, then yeah you may be offended, but as for the rest of us, it shouldn't be something that is going to make you rage in protest. There is no Jesus or Saint Mary that has to be destroyed in NGE.

Not in NGE, but there is something similar to that in another game..

'Kay, but that's another game. We're talking about NGE here, and NGE alone.

But my question which was overlooked. How come when " Jesus" and "Saint Mary" who aren't even mentioned in NGE bring religious controversy, but in Xenosaga , it is specifically stated and I still haven't heard a single argument about it.
See the relevance?

NGE basically showed what many would consider to be the saviour's of this world(angel's) to be more like the 4 horseman-they brought destruction and the end of the world.
They 'told' all of the christian community that your idea's for salvation are actually what's gonna kill us all.
Aside from which, the end of the serie's spark major controversy amongst fan's back then because (i'll be blunt) for a change, the goodguy didn't end up winning and saving the world, but infact ended up restarting the world after some of the most F***ed up stuff which will ever be seen in anime history.

Yeah, NGE is famous due to it's randomness, like Eva Piloting, the intense scenes, and EoE.

Randomness?
You sum up one of the most reknown anime in the world, one which dispite being over 10 year's old is still considered to be one of the best anime out there simply because it shove's all that saviour BS back down the same throat it came from, and one that shall never be surpassed in the word 'randomness'?
Steel angel kurumi was random, this is screwed up with a purpose.
oh, and yes they are re-making the evangellion movie's, and the whole serie's into a few movie's. Infact that's probably why I thought I saw this thread before, I remember talking about the movie's.

Just to clarify, the Angels of NGE aren't the same Angels of the bible, nor does anything in the series contradict the Bible (except Genesis.) The Angels are really Human Beings. Adam and Lilith were Seeds of Life that fertilize planets with different strains of the human race, and they accidently landed on the same planet. See Panspermia.

In short, the Angels are the
result of humans eating from the Tree of Life instead of the Tree of Knowledge.

And just as a sidenote, I should mention that while the CAA (Christian Anime Alliance) noticed the heavy use of Christian images in Evangelion, they still gave this series an 8/10 overall. Typically if there is something over-the-top blasphemous about a series, it will not receive more than a 7 from the CAA.

havent read this topic, but it seems like you're talking about religeon.
i remember reading that gainax said they didnt mean for there to be any meanings behind the names (of angels etc) or any links at all, they just gave them those names, well for whatever reason, but not because there was meant to be meaning

Well there were plenty of other names they could have chosen. Look at Blue Gender "Armor Shrikes" who would name mechs that!! But at least it was somewhat original?

The religious names weren't supposed to serve a purpose other than to separate it from other anime at the time, or so I read from Wiki.
Live action NGE in the works. (: Can't wait.
The "controversy" of NGE stems from the psychological imbalances in the three protags, who are mind you, only children, and the things that they have to go through, and also about the ending, because of its vagueness. My take on it.

While that arguement does have some degree of validity to it, I realy don't think that people are going to be annoyed to the point of death threat's because shinji was the most emo man alive.

Are you sure, because I'm pretty I got that one write. Wiki it.
Wiki wrote: After eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, the biblical account states that Adam and Eve were exiled from the Garden of Eden to prevent them from eating from the Tree of Life.
That's why humans are smart yet we die of old age.

Okay, that makes more sense. I misunderstood the message. I thought the Angels were supposed to represent our punishment for taking from the Fruit of Knowledge. I didn't realize they were humans themselves. ^^

i find it really amazing when you recognise the links to the real world from fictional things
in this case, terms or names from christianity
